It was first observed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in August 2015 and commemorates the successful operation of an engine using peanut oil by Sir Rudolf Diesel on 9 August 1893.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is World Biofuel Day 2026?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>World Biofuel Day 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be observed on 10 August 2026 across India and several other countries. The day promotes the use of biofuels produced from renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels. These fuels can produce biodiesel and bioalcohol while offering higher productivity and better long term sustainability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fourth generation biofuels: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced using advanced technologies on non arable land without destroying biomass, making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly than earlier generations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also Read:- <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/renewable-energy-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Renewable Energy in India<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Examples of Biofuels<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biofuels include several renewable fuels prepared from biomass for transport, industrial and domestic energy needs with lower environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bioethanol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced through fermentation of sugarcane, sugar beet, corn, cassava and biomass, then blended with petrol to prepare fuels such as E10, E15 and E85.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced from <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sugarcane-production-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>sugarcane<\/strong><\/a>, corn, sugar beet, starch crops and biomass residues through fermentation before blending with petrol for transport fuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Biodiesel:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced by transesterification of vegetable oils, animal fats, tallow, acid oils and used cooking oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is widely considered nearly carbon neutral.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, recycled cooking oil and waste oils using transesterification for diesel engines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bio CNG: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purified biogas containing mainly methane, produced from cattle dung, food waste, sewage and agricultural waste with energy properties similar to natural gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Advanced biofuels:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Produced from industrial waste, non food crops, agricultural residues, bio hydrogen, biomethanol and other advanced renewable feedstocks with lower carbon emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drop in fuels:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Liquid fuels prepared from biomass, industrial waste and agricultural residues that meet fuel quality standards and can be used in pure or blended forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>World Biofuel Day Government Initiatives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has introduced several policies and programmes to expand biofuel production, improve ethanol blending and promote cleaner transport fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>National Policy on Biofuels: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approved in June 2018, the policy targets 20% ethanol blending and 5% biodiesel blending by 2030 while expanding feedstocks and encouraging advanced biofuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ethanol-blending-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP)<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotes blending ethanol with petrol. Procurement was expanded to include B heavy molasses and sugarcane juice, while higher prices encouraged greater ethanol production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>GST reduction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Government reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/goods-and-services-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GST<\/strong><\/a> on ethanol for blending from 18% to 5%, making ethanol blending more economically attractive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>PM JI VAN Yojana: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supports commercial projects using advanced technologies for second generation ethanol production and strengthens research and innovation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/gobar-dhan-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\">GOBAR DHAN Scheme<\/a>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Launched in 2018, it converts cattle dung and agricultural waste into compost and bio CNG, supporting village cleanliness and rural income.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>RUCO Initiative: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/food-safety-and-standards-authority-of-india-fssai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)<\/a><\/strong> launched Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) to collect used cooking oil and convert it into biodiesel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Administrative reforms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Measures include simplified procurement by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), administrative pricing for ethanol, amendments to the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act 1951 and enabling lignocellulosic ethanol production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2G Biorefineries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Oil Public Sector Undertakings are planning 12 second generation biorefineries to increase ethanol production and reduce agricultural residue burning, especially in northern India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>National missions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biofuel development complements <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/swachh-bharat-mission-sbm-urban-20\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Swachh Bharat Abhiyan<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/atmanirbhar-bharat-abhiyaan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/make-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Make in India<\/strong><\/a> by promoting clean energy, rural employment and domestic manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>World Biofuel Day Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite rapid progress, biofuel production still faces several economic, technological and environmental challenges requiring continuous policy support.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High water consumption:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Producing ethanol from sugar requires around 2,860 litres of water for one litre of ethanol, creating pressure on water resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Feedstock availability: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agricultural residues, waste materials and biomass supplies vary due to weather, seasonal production and market conditions, affecting production costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complex production process: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biofuel production involves pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, distillation and purification, increasing technological complexity and investment requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infrastructure limitations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethanol requires specialised storage, transportation and handling facilities because of its corrosive nature compared to conventional fuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vehicle compatibility: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/biofuels\/\" target=\"_blank\">biofuel<\/a><\/strong> blends may require modifications in engines and fuel systems for efficient and reliable performance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower energy density:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ethanol contains less energy than petrol, requiring larger quantities to deliver equivalent energy output during vehicle operation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Import dependence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India remains the third largest energy consumer after China and the United States.
