{"id":11789,"date":"2023-06-07T10:24:33","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T04:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11789"},"modified":"2025-03-30T05:27:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T23:57:47","slug":"what-is-varunastra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-varunastra\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Varunastra?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Varunastra:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>ship launched, heavy weight, electrically-propelled anti-submarine torpedo<\/strong> capable of <strong>targeting quiet submarines<\/strong>, <strong>both in deep and shallow waters<\/strong> in an intense countermeasures environment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>designed and developed by Vizag-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)<\/strong> and is <strong>manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Varunastra can be <strong>fired from all Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ships<\/strong> capable of firing heavy weight torpedoes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It has a length of <strong>7.78 meters (25.5 feet) and a diameter of 533.4 mm (21.00 in).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is capable of being <strong>launched from surface ships and submarines.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It can achieve <strong>speeds in excess of 40 knots (74 km\/h; 46 mph) and has a range of 40 km (25 mi).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Weighing around 1.5 tonnes<\/strong>, it can c<strong>arry a 250 kg (550 lb) high-explosive warhead <\/strong>and has a <strong>maximum operating depth of 600 metres<\/strong> (2,000 ft).It has long range with multi maneuvering capabilities.<\/li>\n<li>The torpedo\u2019s <strong>guidance system uses active-passive acoustic homing<\/strong>, wire <strong>guidance, and GPS\/NavIC satellite guidance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>conformal array transducers that allow it to look at wider angles<\/strong> than most common torpedoes.<\/li>\n<li>It also has an <strong>advanced autonomous guidance algorithm<\/strong> with low drift navigational aids, an insensitive warhead that can operate in various combat scenarios, and a GPS-based locating aid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Torpedo?<\/h3>\n<p>A torpedo is essentially a guided missile that happens to &#8220;fly&#8221; underwater.
