{"id":11789,"date":"2026-10-16T12:24:33","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T06:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11789"},"modified":"2026-10-16T14:36:38","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T09:06:38","slug":"what-is-varunastra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-varunastra\/","title":{"rendered":"Varunastra"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Varunastra Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth Rs 4,106 crore for the acquisition of a dedicated communication satellite capability, GSAT-7C for the Indian Air Force, and Varunastra Heavy Weight Torpedoes for the Indian Navy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Varunastra<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a ship<\/span><b> launched, heavy weight, electrically-propelled anti-submarine torpedo.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is capable of <\/span><b>targeting quiet submarines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both <\/span><b>in deep and shallow waters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an intense countermeasures environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was designed and developed by <\/span><b>Vizag-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NSTL) under the <\/span><b>Defence Research and Development Organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DRDO).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be fired from all <\/span><b>Anti-submarine warfare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ASW) ships capable of firing heavy weight torpedoes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Varunastra<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is capable of being <\/span><b>launched from surface ships and submarines.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Speed:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can achieve speeds in <\/span><b>excess of 40 knots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (74 km\/h; 46 mph) and has a range of 40 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Capacity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can <\/span><b>carry a 250 kg high-explosive warhead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has a maximum operating depth of 600 metres (2,000 ft).
