Swaminathan\u2019s emphasis on linking ecological sustainability with livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dr. M.S. Pechiyammal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A leader of the Neithal <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/self-help-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Self Help Group<\/strong><\/a> in Vedhalai, Ramanathapuram, she pioneered community-based ghost gear recovery along the Gulf of Mannar coastline by mobilising fishing communities to collect discarded fishing nets, nylon ropes and plastic waste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Govindhammal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Former Director of the Nallavur Farmer Producer Company Limited in Villupuram, she promoted sustainable agriculture and helped small farmers access better seeds and markets through collective action.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026 <\/span><b>highlights the importance of grassroots participation in environmental protection.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The recognition of P. Pechiyammal and Govindhammal shows how local initiatives can address challenges such as marine plastic pollution and unsustainable agricultural practices while also supporting livelihoods. It also highlights the important role of women in community-based conservation and reinforces the need to balance development with biodiversity protection and ecological sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Dr. M.S. Swaminathan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Dr. Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan (1925\u20132023)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an <\/span><b>eminent Indian agricultural scientist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose work played a central role in transforming Indian agriculture and strengthening food security.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was a leading figure in India\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/green-revolution-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Green Revolution<\/strong>,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> particularly through the promotion of high-yielding varieties and modern agricultural practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He served as <\/span><b>Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and contributed to strengthening agricultural research and policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>chaired the National Commission on Farmers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which examined issues concerning farmers, agricultural development and rural livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He founded the <\/span><b>M.S.
