Her contributions ranged from the Salt Satyagraha and women\u2019s political participation to refugee rehabilitation and the promotion of Indian handicrafts, handlooms and performing arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay Early Life and Social Reform<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was born on<\/span><b> 3 April 1903<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>Mangalore, Karnataka,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a progressive family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was <\/span><b>married at a young age and widowed as a child<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which exposed her to the social restrictions and stigma faced by widows in colonial India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1919, she remarried <\/span><b>Harindranath Chattopadhyay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a poet and playwright, challenging the prevailing social norms surrounding widow remarriage and women\u2019s choices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her mother, <\/span><b>Girijabai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was involved in social reform and women\u2019s organisations, which also influenced Kamaladevi\u2019s early thinking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She studied at <\/span><b>Queen Mary\u2019s College, Madras<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and later travelled to England, where she studied sociology at <\/span><b>Bedford College, London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and gained exposure to social work and urban poverty.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These experiences shaped Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay\u2019s commitment to women\u2019s equality, social justice and reform of discriminatory social practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and Women\u2019s Political Participation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was among the earliest Indian women to enter electoral politics and organise women for greater participation in public life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she became the<\/span><b> first woman in India to contest a legislative election<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, standing for the <\/span><b>Madras Provincial Legislative Council.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/foundation-of-indian-national-congress\/\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, linking political freedom with social and economic justice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and Women\u2019s Empowerment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, national freedom was incomplete without the freedom and empowerment of women.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She advocated equal political rights and economic independence for women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She supported reforms concerning marriage, inheritance, employment and women\u2019s working conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" affairs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and Partition Refugee Rehabilitation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Independence, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay shifted much of her attention from electoral politics to the rehabilitation of people displaced by Partition.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She helped organise refugee rehabilitation through the <\/span><b>Indian Cooperative Union,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founded in 1948.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was closely associated with the development of<\/span><b> Faridabad <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a cooperative-based settlement for refugees.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her approach went beyond providing shelter by focusing on employment, productive work and community institutions.
