It is known for its <\/span><b>strategic importance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as its place in Indian military history. Surrounded by rugged mountains and harsh weather conditions, the pass has become a symbol of <\/span><b>courage, sacrifice and national pride<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it an important topic from both geographical and historical perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rezang La Pass Location and Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rezang La<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a high-altitude mountain pass in the <\/span><b>Chushul sector of Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, close to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/line-of-control-loc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Line of Actual Control (LAC)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between India and China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located at around <\/span><b>5,200 metres (17,000 feet)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> above sea level, the pass has <\/span><b>thin air, low oxygen levels and extremely cold weather<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making the region difficult for both travel and military operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area has a <\/span><b>dry, rocky and barren landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, typical of Ladakh&#8217;s cold desert. Severe winters and heavy snowfall can make the region difficult to access for several months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rezang La lies near <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pangong-tso-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Pangong Tso<\/b><\/a><b> and Spanggur Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forms part of the strategically important <\/span><b>Chushul Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its high ridges provide a commanding view of the surrounding terrain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rezang La Pass Historical and Strategic Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rezang La became an important part of Indian military history after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/battle-of-rezang-la\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Battle of Rezang La<\/b><\/a><b> on 18 November 1962<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sino-indian-war\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Sino-Indian War<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pass was strategically important for the <\/span><b>defence of Chushul<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as control over the surrounding heights helped prevent an enemy advance into the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its location near the <\/span><b>Chushul airfield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> further increased its military importance, as the airfield was an important logistical and operational facility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>high altitude, harsh climate and difficult terrain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made Rezang La a challenging military position, but these same geographical features also provided defensive advantages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chushul sector continues to hold strategic importance because of its proximity to the <\/span><b>India-China border and the LAC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rezang La Battle 1962 and the Valour of Indian Soldiers<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Battle of Rezang La<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was fought on <\/span><b>18 November 1962<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Chinese forces attacked the Indian position defended by <\/span><b>C Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by <\/span><b>Major Shaitan Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><b>120 Indian soldiers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faced a much larger attacking force.
