Researchers studied 12 glaciers between <\/span><b>1992 and 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and found that their average flow speed declined by about <\/span><b>2.43 metres per year per decade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Key Findings<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average glacier flow speed fell by around <\/span><b>16%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during 1992\u20132023.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glacier surface thinning increased from about <\/span><b>0.22 metres per year in 2000-05<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>0.57 metres per year in 2015-20<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warmer temperatures are causing greater ice loss and thinning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As glaciers become thinner, the force that moves ice downhill also decreases, leading to slower glacier movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also Read:- <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tribes-of-ladakh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tribes of Ladakh<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why are Zanskar Glaciers Important?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zanskar is a <\/span><b>high-altitude, cold and dry region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where rainfall is limited. Snow and glaciers are therefore important sources of water. Glacier melt provides water to rivers, farms, ecosystems and local communities during the warmer months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some important glaciers in the region include <\/span><b>Drang Drung, Machoi and Parkachik<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The meltwater from the Zanskar glacier system contributes to the river network connected with the <\/span><b>Indus Basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Impact on Water Security<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The slowdown and thinning of Zanskar glaciers can affect the long-term availability of meltwater, creating risks for communities, agriculture and ecosystems in the water-scarce Ladakh region.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced water availability:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Less glacier ice may mean lower meltwater supply in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Agriculture:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Irrigation-dependent farming may face water shortages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drinking water:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Local communities may experience greater water stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecosystems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Changes in river flow can affect mountain biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Downstream regions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Reduced glacier melt may impact water availability in the wider Indus Basin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Way Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a need for <\/span><b>regular monitoring of Himalayan glaciers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through satellite observations and ground-based studies. Better glacier and river-flow data can help predict future water availability and climate-related risks.
