{"id":11914,"date":"2025-10-17T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11914"},"modified":"2025-10-17T13:29:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T07:59:46","slug":"chikungunya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chikungunya\/","title":{"rendered":"Chikungunya"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Chikungunya Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York State Department of Health recently confirmed the first locally acquired case of chikungunya in the United States in over six years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Chikungunya<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>mosquito-borne viral disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by the <\/span><b>chikungunya virus (CHIKV).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>causes fever and severe joint pain.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was<\/span><b> first described<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during an outbreak in <\/span><b>southern Tanzania in 1952 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has <\/span><b>now <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been reported <\/span><b>in more than 110 countries in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>name \u201cchikungunya\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> derives from a word in the Kimakonde language of southern Tanzania,<\/span><b> meaning \u201cthat which bends up\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and describes the <\/span><b>stooped appearance of infected people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with severe joint pain (arthralgia).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Chikungunya <\/b><b>Transmission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is transmitted to humans by the <\/span><b>bites of infected female mosquitoes,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most commonly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two species can also transmit other viruses, including dengue and Zika viruses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>not transmitted from one person to another.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (i.e., it is <\/span><b>not a contagious disease).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Chikungunya <\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In symptomatic patients, CHIKV <\/span><b>disease onset is typically 4\u20138 days (range 2\u201312 days) after the bite <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of an infected mosquito.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><b>common symptom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an abrupt <\/span><b>onset of fever, o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ften accompanied by <\/span><b>joint pain.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Severe joint pain usually lasts a few days but can persist for months or even years.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Serious complications are uncommon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but atypical severe cases can cause long-term symptoms and even death, especially in older people and in children under one year old.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Chikungunya <\/b><b>Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is<\/span><b> no vaccine or antiviral drug treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for chikungunya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Treatment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>focused on relieving the symptoms.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/world-news\/us-news\/what-is-chikungunya-virus-new-york-reports-the-first-locally-transmitted-case-in-the-us-in-six-years\/4013087\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>FE<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV).
