text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>active stratovolcano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in <\/span><b>Albay province <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><b>Luzon Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>Philippines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is part of the <\/span><b>Pacific Ring of Fire.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>Philippines&#8217; most active volcano.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called the <\/span><b>world\u2019s most perfect volcanic cone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the <\/span><b>symmetry of its shape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it has a base 130 km in circumference and <\/span><b>rises to 2,462 metres from the shores of Albay Gulf.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>large abaca plantations on its lower slopes.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Historical eruptions date back to 1616 CE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have been characterized by <\/span><b>Strombolian eruptions, lava flows,<\/b> <b>pyroclastic flows, and mudflows.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayon&#8217;s most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1200 people and devastated several towns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An eruption in 1993 caused 79 deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequent <\/span><b>eruptions in 2000, 2006, 2009, 2014, 2018 and 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forced tens of thousands of people in nearby villages to evacuate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is a Stratovolcano?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> tall, steep, and cone-shaped<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type of volcano.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike flat shield volcanoes, they <\/span><b>have higher peaks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>typically found above subduction zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they are <\/span><b>often part of large volcanically active regions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as th<\/span><b>e Ring of Fire <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that frames much of the Pacific Ocean.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
