Its designation also supports public attention towards protecting India\u2019s wildlife and preserving important tiger habitats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>National Animal of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/royal-bengal-tigers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Royal<\/strong> <strong>Bengal<\/strong> <strong>Tiger<\/strong><\/a> is the National Animal of India and belongs to the tiger species <strong>Panthera<\/strong> <strong>tigris<\/strong>. It is a powerful carnivore found across diverse Indian habitats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific Name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Bengal Tiger belongs to the species <\/span><b><i>Panthera tigris<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It functions as an <strong>apex<\/strong> <strong>predator<\/strong> within <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ecosystems<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why was Tiger Adopted as National Animal of India?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Bengal Tiger was selected as the National Animal of India because of its national distribution, ecological importance and distinctive qualities of strength, grace, agility and power.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adoption in 1972: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Indian<\/strong> <strong>Board for Wildlife<\/strong><\/a> adopted the Bengal Tiger as India\u2019s National Animal in 1972, replacing the Asiatic Lion due to its wider national presence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Earlier National Animal:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/asiatic-lions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Asiatic Lion<\/strong><\/a> was accepted as the National Animal of India by <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/prime-ministers-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Prime Minister<\/strong><\/a> of India <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/jawaharlal-nehru\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pt.
