They include symbols chosen to reflect the country\u2019s cultural and natural heritage. The designation of a national flower gives recognition to a plant with deep historical and cultural importance. The <\/span><b>National Flower of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is widely considered to be the Lotus. However, the Government has clarified through an RTI response that the Botanical Survey of India has not officially named any flower as the national flower.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>National Flower of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotus is widely recognised as the National Flower of India because of its cultural, religious and symbolic importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific Name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientific name of Lotus is Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. It is a rhizomatous aquatic perennial belonging to the family Nelumbonaceae.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotus grows in freshwater ponds, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lakes-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>lakes<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wetland-ecosystems\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>wetlands<\/strong><\/a> and slow moving water bodies, especially in warm and semitropical climatic conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is native to South, East and Southeast Asia, with natural populations also extending into northern Australia. It is widely cultivated in other regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appearance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotus is an aquatic perennial with large emergent leaves and prominent flowers. Its flowers occur in white, red, blue, pink and purple shades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Uses: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotus has food, medicinal and ornamental uses. Its seeds, rhizomes, leaves and leaf stalks are edible and traditionally used in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lotus symbolises beauty, knowledge, enlightenment and non attachment. It holds an important place in Indian art, mythology, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hinduism\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hinduism<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/buddhism\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Buddhism<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why was Lotus Adopted as National Flower of India?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lotus is widely accepted as the National Flower of India as it has been associated with Indian culture, spirituality and traditional symbolism for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cultural Symbolism:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lotus represents beauty, knowledge, enlightenment and non attachment.
