The observance connects Chennai\u2019s present identity with its historical and colonial origins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Madras Day 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Madras Day 2026<\/strong> will be observed on August 22, 2026. It will mark the 23rd anniversary of Madras Day and the 387th anniversary of the founding of Madras in 1639. The date is widely associated with the East India Company\u2019s acquisition of Madraspatnam. The annual observance was initiated in 2004. Madras Day celebrations focus on the city\u2019s history, heritage and evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Madras Day 2026 Theme<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Madras Day 2026 Theme<\/strong> has not been announced yet. The observance generally centres on Chennai\u2019s history, heritage, cultural identity and transformation. Its programmes have included heritage walks, lectures, exhibitions, quizzes, film screenings, public performances, food festivals and competitions. The celebrations have gradually expanded from a small set of events into wider city-based programmes involving communities, institutions and cultural groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Madras Day 2026 History and Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madras Day 2026 traces its historical basis to the 1639 land grant that enabled the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/british-east-india-company\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>English East India Company<\/strong><\/a> to establish a settlement at Madraspatnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1639 Land Grant: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francis Day obtained a grant for the East India Company from Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, covering a three-mile-long coastal strip at Madraspatnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fort St. George: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The English established Fort St. George at the settlement. August 22 remains the widely observed date for Madras Day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Evolution of Madras State<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The political identity of Madras changed significantly after independence, eventually becoming Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Madras State: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indian-independence-act-1947\/\" target=\"_blank\">independence in 1947<\/a><\/strong>, the former Madras province continued as Madras State. It included territories that were later reorganised into separate South Indian states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tamil Nadu Movement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K. P. Sankaralinganar launched a movement in 1956 demanding that Madras State be renamed Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Renaming of State: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A resolution for renaming Madras State was passed and the state officially became Tamil Nadu on January 14, 1969.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chennai Renaming:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Madras City was officially renamed Chennai on July 17, 1996. The name is associated with Chennapatnam and reflects the region\u2019s local historical identity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Modern Chennai:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chennai has developed into an important educational, commercial, cultural, healthcare and automobile manufacturing centre.
