the historic Parichha dam as a \u2018World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS)\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Parichha Dam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/betwa-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Betwa River<\/a><\/strong> in <\/span><b>Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a key <\/span><b>component of Betwa Canal System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which supplies water for agriculture to drought-prone areas of Bundelkhand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parichha Dam has played an important role in the irrigation system of Bundelkhand\u00a0for nearly 140 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It benefits irrigation in several areas <\/span><b>of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Historical Background<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1855, <\/span><b>Captain Strachey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proposed developing a canal system for Bundelkhand, following which surveys were undertaken.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction of the dam began in 1881 and it <\/span><b>became operational in 1886.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Others in the World Heritage Irrigation Structure list<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: In 2022, the <\/span><b>Sukwa-Dukwan Weir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Jhansi was included in the ICID heritage list<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>established in 1950.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a leading scientific, technical, international not-for-profit, non-governmental organization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ICID&#8217;s mission is to promote \u2018Sustainable agriculture water management\u2019 to achieve \u2018Water secure world free of poverty and hunger through sustainable rural development\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is working on irrigation, drainage and flood management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under its WHIS programme, the ICID recognises historically significant irrigation and drainage structures for their <\/span><b>engineering, historical and continuing significance.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Criteria for World Heritage Irrigation Structure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure shall <\/span><b>be more than 100 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> old;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structures shall fall <\/span><b>under one of the following categories:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dams (operational largely for irrigation purpose),<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water storage structures such as tanks for irrigation,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barrages and other water diversion structures,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canal Systems,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old waterwheels,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old shadouf,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture drainage structures,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any site or structure functionally related to present or past agricultural water
