Changes in the NAO affect westerly winds, the jet stream and storm tracks, thereby influencing temperature and rainfall, particularly over Europe and North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is North Atlantic Oscillation?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pattern of change in air pressure over the North <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/atlantic-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Atlantic Ocean<\/strong><\/a>. It mainly involves two pressure systems &#8211; the <\/span><b>Azores High in the south and the Icelandic Low in the north.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pressure difference between these two systems changes over time. This changes the strength of the westerly winds, which then affects the jet stream, storm tracks, temperature and rainfall over Europe and North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>North Atlantic Oscillation Phases\u00a0<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NAO has two phases &#8211; positive and negative. The key difference between them is whether the pressure difference between the Azores High and Icelandic Low is stronger or weaker than normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>North Atlantic Oscillation <\/b><b>Positive Phase\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the positive phase, the pressure difference between the Azores High and Icelandic Low is stronger than normal. This produces stronger westerly winds across the North Atlantic.
