structure recently found near the historic Golconda Fort in Hyderabad is not a tunnel, as had been reported, but a small rectangular chamber made of granite stone. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Golconda Fort<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a historic fort located towards the<\/span><b> western outskirts of Hyderabad, Telangana.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name originates from the Telugu words &#8220;Golla Konda&#8221; meaning &#8220;Shepherd&#8217;s Hill&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Golconda Fort <\/b><b>History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>erected <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>1143 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the <\/span><b>Kakatiya Dynasty.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it <\/span><b>rose to prominence <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it came under the rule of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/qutb-shahi-dynasty\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Qutub Shahi Dynasty <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the <\/span><b>16th century, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i.e., when <\/span><b>Quli Qutub Shah declared<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his <\/span><b>independence from the Bahmani Sultanate in 1518.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The striking fort has <\/span><b>since then expanded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a mud fortress to a <\/span><b>lofty structure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a 10 km outer wall.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>From 1518 to 1591, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golconda served as the<\/span><b> capital of the Qutb Shahi rulers before they shifted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their<\/span><b> capital to Hyderabad.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a <\/span><b>failed attempt in the year 1686,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Mughal emperor Aurangzeb <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was finally able to<\/span><b> breach the impregnable fort in 1687<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a long nine-month siege.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this, Golconda<\/span><b> became part of the Mughal Empire.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golconda region was <\/span><b>world-famous for its diamond mines.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some of the most valuable diamonds in history, including the <\/span><b>Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Nassak Diamond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were once <\/span><b>associated with this region.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Golconda Fort <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a grand structure <\/span><b>built on a granite hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of altitude 400 feet with a circumference of 7 km, displaying the beautiful fusion of <\/span><b>Hindu-Islamic style of architecture.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its wall comprises<\/span><b> 8 gates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> 87 bastions, each one<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reaching the height of 50-60 feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst the eight gates, <\/span><b>Fateh Darwaza is the main gate,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the <\/span><b>victorious march of King Aurangzeb <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proceeded through it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>At Fateh Darwaza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one can witness <\/span><b>fantastic acoustical effects,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is one among the many famous engineering marvels at Golconda.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There ar<\/span><b>e three powerful consecutive fortification walls, each within the other. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>first line of the wall contains a town;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>second line is a double wall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>runs around the foot of the hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on which the<\/span><b> citadel stands.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> third line<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is further up the hill, lying within the second, composed of<\/span><b> masonry and natural boulders.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>tombs of the Qutub Shahi kings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, built with Islamic architecture, lie about 1 km<\/span><b> north of the outer wall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Golconda.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Situated with the fortress are the dwellings of the queens and princesses and homesteads of their retainers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is quite famous for its<\/span><b> royal apartments, parade grounds,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> numerous halls, and <\/span><b>mosques<\/b><span
