{"id":120655,"date":"2026-08-23T14:36:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T09:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=120655"},"modified":"2026-08-23T17:44:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T12:14:26","slug":"united-kingdom-maritime-trade-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-kingdom-maritime-trade-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tanker was boarded by six armed people who took control of the vessel and diverted it towards Somalia, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>British Royal Navy-sponsored organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that was formed in 2001 with an office in Dubai<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>handle distress calls during maritime security threats.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, it was moved to<\/span><b> Portsmouth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>U.K.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>primary point of contact for commercial vessels with military forces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For its scale of operations, the UKMTO is a lean organisation with a team of 15 <\/span><b>civilian \u2018watchkeepers\u2019 and three managers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team, which works in shifts, <\/span><b>takes calls from ship masters irrespective of their nationalities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>coordinates rescue responses <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> issues warnings and advisories.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UKMTO <\/span><b>works in West Asia and the Indian Ocean Region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through an<\/span><b> information framework agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>operates a \u201cVoluntary Reporting Scheme (VRS) within the Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA)\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outlined in a maritime security chart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This zone stretches to almost 2.5 million sq. miles of the ocean and includes the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/red-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Red Sea<\/a>, Arabian Sea,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a majority of the <\/span><b>northwestern Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UKMTO has <\/span><b>three 24\/7 phone lines and an e-mail to report emergencies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or incidents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ship masters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>requested to file multiple reports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 an <\/span><b>initial report when entering the VRA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><b> daily report while transiting the area,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a<\/span><b> final report after exiting the VRA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or reaching a port.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UKMTO <\/span><b>issues several categories of communication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the maritime community.\u00a0 These are in the form of <\/span><b>Warnings, Advisories, Reports,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Records of Maritime Information Exchange Meetings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UKMTO<\/span><b> hosts all warnings on its website<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as hosting notices from partner organisations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/world\/tanker-off-yemen-boarded-by-armed-people-diverted-towards-somalia-ukmto-says\/3020364\/?amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TP<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UKMTO is a Royal Navy-sponsored organisation formed in 2001 to handle distress calls and support maritime security during threats at sea.
