The Vidhan Sabha is known as the <\/span><b>Legislative Assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the Vidhan Parishad is called the <\/span><b>Legislative Council<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A state may have either a <\/span><b>unicameral legislature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with only the Vidhan Sabha, or a <\/span><b>bicameral legislature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with both the Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major <\/span><b>difference between Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lies in their composition, method of election, tenure, powers and role in the legislative process. These differences has been discussed below in this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Vidhan Sabha?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Vidhan Sabha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Legislative Assembly, is the <\/span><b>lower House of the State Legislature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It consists of representatives directly elected by the people of the state from different territorial constituencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vidhan Sabha is the most important representative institution at the state level because it directly reflects the <\/span><b>popular mandate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The state government is also accountable to the Vidhan Sabha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Constitution provides for the composition and functioning of Legislative Assemblies under various provisions, particularly <\/span><b>Articles 168 and 170<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Vidhan Parishad?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/state-legislative-council\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Vidhan Parishad<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Legislative Council, is the <\/span><b>upper House of the State Legislature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unlike the Vidhan Sabha, it is a <\/span><b>permanent House<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cannot be dissolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legislative Council is not present in every state. It exists only in states that have adopted a <\/span><b>bicameral legislature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Constitution deals with the composition of the Legislative Council mainly under <\/span><b>Article 171<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vidhan Parishad is intended to provide a <\/span><b>second chamber for legislative review and discussion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its composition is also different from the Vidhan Sabha because its members represent different groups such as local authorities, graduates and teachers, along with nominated
