However, sustaining this growth is becoming difficult amid soil degradation, rising input costs, water stress and climate variability. Regenerative Agriculture offers a pathway to restore the ecological foundations of farming while improving productivity, resource efficiency and farmers\u2019 resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Regenerative Agriculture?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Regenerative Agriculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a farming approach that <\/span><b>focuses on restoring soil health, improving biodiversity and making farms more resilient to climate change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It aims to improve the natural health of farmland while ensuring good productivity in the long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike conventional farming, which often focuses mainly on maintaining production, Regenerative Agriculture aims to make the soil and farming ecosystem healthier over time. <\/span><b>Its core principles include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Minimising soil disturbance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Avoiding excessive tilling and disturbance of the soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Protecting living roots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Keeping the roots of perennial crops alive in the soil for longer periods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maintaining soil cover<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Keeping the soil covered to protect it and maintain soil health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Integrating livestock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Combining livestock with crop farming as part of the farming system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limiting chemical inputs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Reducing excessive use of chemical fertilisers and other chemical inputs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Enhancing biodiversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Encouraging a greater variety of crops, plants and other organisms in the farming system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why is Regenerative Agriculture Needed in India?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need arises from the growing pressure on the natural resources that sustain Indian agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/declining-soil-health\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Declining soil health<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Years of intensive cultivation and heavy chemical use are leaving soils tired and less responsive, affecting their fertility and productivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rising input requirements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As soil health declines, farmers may need higher levels of inputs to maintain yields, increasing cultivation costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate variability:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/heat-waves\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heatwaves<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dry spells and excessive rainfall can damage crops and make farm incomes more uncertain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water stress:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Increasing climate variability and water pressure make efficient water use essential for maintaining agricultural productivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Environmental degradation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Declining soil health and weaker ecosystem functions can affect biodiversity and the long-term productivity of farmland.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Regenerative Agriculture Practices in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is already using several farming practices that reflect the principles of Regenerative Agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural Farming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/natural-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\">Natural farming <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces dependence on synthetic chemical inputs and uses locally prepared biological inputs such as Beejamrut, Jeevamrut, GhanJeevamrut, Neemastra and Dashparni. It also promotes mulching, multi-cropping, continuous soil cover, minimal soil disturbance and livestock integration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soil Health Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Green manuring, cover cropping and mulching improve soil quality. Green manure adds organic matter and nutrients, cover crops protect the soil and support nutrient cycling, while mulch conserves moisture and regulates soil temperature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/micro-irrigation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Micro-Irrigation<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Drip and sprinkler systems improve water-use efficiency. Drip Irrigation delivers water closer to plant roots, while sprinkler systems provide more uniform field coverage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Integrated Farming Systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/integrated-farming-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Integrated Farming Systems (IFS)<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combine crops with livestock, fisheries, horticulture, agroforestry and apiculture. Crop rotation, intercropping and mixed farming allow better use of farm resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Agroforestry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/agroforestry-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agroforestry<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines trees with agricultural crops, particularly in rainfed areas. It can improve soil moisture, regulate temperatures, store carbon and provide farmers with additional income.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific Nutrient Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Practices such as deep placement of supergranular urea, leaf-colour charts, legume intercropping and biological inputs help improve nitrogen-use efficiency and reduce environmental losses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Regenerative Agriculture Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By rebuilding natural resources, Regenerative Agriculture can generate environmental, economic and livelihood benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Environmental Benefits<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Improved soil fertility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Greater soil organic matter and better soil structure support long-term productivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Better water retention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Healthy soils can retain more moisture and reduce runoff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Higher biodiversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Diverse farming systems provide favourable conditions for pollinators, beneficial insects and soil microorganisms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower environmental impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Efficient nutrient and water management reduces resource wastage and pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Carbon storage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Healthier soils and agroforestry systems can increase carbon sequestration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced erosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Soil cover and improved soil structure protect agricultural land from erosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Economic and Livelihood Benefits<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower input costs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Reduced dependence on synthetic inputs and excessive irrigation can lower cultivation expenses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diversified incomes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Livestock, fisheries, horticulture and trees provide additional income sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Greater income stability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Diversification can reduce the financial impact of crop failure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Long-term productivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Restoration of soil health helps protect the productive capacity of farmland.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Government Initiatives Promoting Regenerative Agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government support is addressing different components of regenerative agriculture through targeted schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>National Mission on Natural Farming<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2024, the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-mission-on-natural-farming-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supports farmers in transitioning towards natural farming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides an output-based incentive of \u20b94,000 per acre per year for two years, covering up to one acre per farmer. It also provides for 10,000 need-based Bio-input Resource Centres and natural farming clusters supported by Community Resource Persons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 5 March 2026, 18,786 clusters had been formed, covering 8.80 lakh hectares and enrolling 18.19 lakh farmers. Around 33,676 Community Resource Persons had been trained.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/paramparagat-krishi-vikas-yojana\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched in 2015, promotes organic farming through clusters, certification and market support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmers adopting organic farming receive \u20b931,500 per hectare over three years. The scheme had covered 16.90 lakh hectares as of 31 October 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Per Drop More Crop<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implemented since 2015-16, <\/span><b>Per Drop More Crop (PDMC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) promotes drip and sprinkler irrigation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government provides 55% financial assistance to small and marginal farmers and 45% to other farmers. About 109 lakh hectares had been covered by May 2026, with \u20b926,325 crore released as central assistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Rainfed Area Development Programme<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rainfed-area-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rainfed Area Development Programme (RAD)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promotes Integrated Farming Systems through an area-based cluster approach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmers receive \u20b930,000 per family for adopting IFS, while \u20b910,000 per cluster is provided for training and capacity building. The programme had covered 9.53 lakh hectares and benefited 15.73 lakh farmers as of December 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Agroforestry Component under PM-RKVY<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The erstwhile <\/span><b>Sub-Mission on Agroforestry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was restructured as the Agroforestry Component under Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) from 2023-24.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports nurseries, quality planting material, tissue culture, research, skill development and other agroforestry activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During 2025-26, sanctions of \u20b978.31 crore were issued to 27 States\/Union Territories, while 135 new nurseries were established and around 176.59 lakh saplings were raised in existing nurseries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Soil Health Card Scheme<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2015, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/soil-health-card-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Soil Health Card Scheme<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides farmers with scientific information about the nutrient and physical condition of their soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The card assesses 12 soil parameters and provides crop-specific recommendations on fertilisers, bio-fertilisers, organic inputs and soil treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 13 March 2026, 25.89 crore Soil Health Cards had been generated, while around 7.17 lakh demonstrations had been conducted to promote balanced fertiliser use.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Regenerative Agriculture and Climate Resilience<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regenerative Agriculture helps make Indian farming more resilient to climate-related stresses by improving soil health, conserving resources and strengthening farm ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Better soil moisture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Healthy soils retain more water, helping crops withstand droughts and dry spells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced soil erosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Soil cover and improved soil structure reduce runoff and erosion during heavy rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diversified farming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Integrated Farming Systems combine crops with livestock, fisheries and other activities, reducing the risk of crop failure during climate extremes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Agroforestry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Trees improve soil moisture, regulate local temperatures and help farmers cope with unpredictable rainfall, particularly in rainfed areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Efficient water use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Micro-irrigation and better water management reduce water wastage and improve resilience to water stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Better nutrient management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Balanced and efficient use of nutrients improves crop performance while reducing environmental losses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Carbon storage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Healthy soils and agroforestry systems can store more carbon, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, Regenerative Agriculture can help Indian agriculture adapt to climate variability while also contributing to climate-change mitigation. It is closely aligned with SDG 13 (Climate Action), particularly Target 13.1, which focuses on strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Challenges in Scaling Regenerative Agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transition from individual practices to regenerative farming at scale faces several practical barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transition uncertainty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Farmers may hesitate to change established practices because the short-term effects on yields and income can be uncertain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Knowledge gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Regenerative farming requires greater awareness and technical guidance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Region-specific requirements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: India&#8217;s diverse soils, crops and agro-climatic conditions require locally suitable models.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limited access to inputs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Bio-inputs, quality planting material, irrigation technologies and advisory services are not equally accessible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Market limitations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Farmers need reliable markets and better price realisation for organic and sustainably produced crops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Capacity constraints<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Scaling requires trained extension workers, demonstrations and continuous farmer support.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Way Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India needs to move from promoting individual regenerative practices towards integrated, economically viable and region-specific farming systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen extension services through <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/krishi-vigyan-kendra\/\" target=\"_blank\">Krishi Vigyan Kendras<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, agricultural universities and trained community resource persons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce transition risks through demonstrations, technical support and suitable incentives.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop local bio-input systems to make natural and biological inputs easily accessible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span
