India has a rich tradition of using different calendars due to its <\/span><b>cultural, religious and regional diversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These calendars are mainly based on the <\/span><b>movement of the Sun, Moon, or a combination of both<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Calendars in India, its types and Significance are discussed in detail in this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Calendars in India History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of <\/span><b>calendars in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is closely connected with the country&#8217;s traditions, religious practices, astronomy and regional customs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different communities developed or followed different systems for measuring time and fixing important dates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian calendars are mainly based on three astronomical systems: <\/span><b>lunar, solar and luni-solar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A lunar calendar follows the phases of the Moon, a solar calendar is based on the apparent movement of the Sun, while a luni-solar calendar combines both systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need for accurate calendars became important for determining <\/span><b>festivals, agricultural activities, religious ceremonies, seasons and administrative events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a result, different calendar systems continued to develop across different parts of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vikram Samvat, Saka Samvat, Hijri Calendar and Gregorian Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are among the major calendar systems followed in India. Each has a different origin, structure and purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Calendar Reform Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headed by eminent scientist <\/span><b>Prof. Meghnad Saha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was formed in <\/span><b>1952<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to examine the different calendar systems used in India and recommend a more uniform system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee studied the existing calendars and recommended a <\/span><b>scientifically designed national calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the Saka Era. The Government of India accepted the recommendations and the <\/span><b>Saka Calendar was adopted as the National Calendar in 1957<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Types of Calendars Used in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>types of calendars used in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can broadly be understood according to the astronomical system on which they are based.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lunar Calendars:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These calendars are based mainly on the <\/span><b>phases or movement of the Moon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A lunar year has 12 lunar months and is generally around <\/span><b>354 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year. The <\/span><b>Hijri Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important example of a purely lunar calendar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Solar Calendars:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Solar calendars are based on the <\/span><b>apparent movement of the Sun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and maintain a closer relationship with the seasons. A solar year is approximately <\/span><b>365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Saka Calendar and Gregorian Calendar are examples of solar-based calendars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Luni-Solar Calendars:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These calendars combine <\/span><b>lunar months with the solar year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They use the phases of the Moon to determine months while making adjustments to remain broadly aligned with the solar year. Traditional Hindu calendars are generally based on the luni-solar system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Major Traditional Calendars in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Major Traditional Calendars in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represent the country\u2019s diverse cultural and religious traditions. The key traditional calendars, their <\/span><b>origin, features and significance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are discussed below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Vikram Samvat<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vikram Samvat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the oldest and most widely recognised traditional calendar eras in India. It began around <\/span><b>57 BCE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is traditionally associated with <\/span><b>Vikramaditya, the ruler of Ujjain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although historians have different views about its exact origin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It follows a <\/span><b>luni-solar system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is closely connected with Hindu religious traditions. It is used to determine dates of important festivals and religious occasions in several parts of India and Nepal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A traditional Vikram Samvat year generally has <\/span><b>12 months and about 354 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since this is shorter than the solar year, adjustments are made through the addition of an <\/span><b>intercalary month, known as Adhik Maas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The months include <\/span><b>Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, Kartika, Margashirsha, Pausha, Magha and Phalguna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each month is divided into two parts: <\/span><b>Shukla Paksha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the bright lunar fortnight and <\/span><b>Krishna Paksha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the dark lunar fortnight. These phases are important in determining many Hindu religious dates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginning of the year and the way months are calculated can vary across regions. For example, different traditions are followed in <\/span><b>North India and Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reflecting the regional diversity of Indian calendar practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Saka Samvat<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Saka Samvat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began in <\/span><b>78 CE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is another important calendar era associated with Indian history. Different historical traditions have been suggested regarding its origin and founder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saka system became particularly important after the Government of India adopted a reformed version of it as the <\/span><b>National Calendar of India in 1957<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saka Calendar is a <\/span><b>solar calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and follows a fixed annual structure. A normal year has <\/span><b>365 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while a leap year has 366 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the National Calendar, <\/span><b>Chaitra is the first month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Chaitra 1 generally falls on <\/span><b>March 22<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><b>March 21 in a Gregorian leap year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saka Calendar is used along with the Gregorian Calendar for selected <\/span><b>official government purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including government publications, official calendars and public communications.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Hijri Calendar<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Hijri Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as the Islamic Calendar, is a <\/span><b>lunar calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consisting of 12 lunar months. Its era begins in <\/span><b>622 CE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking the Hijra or migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Hijri year has approximately <\/span><b>354 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it shorter than the Gregorian solar year. Since no regular adjustment is made to match the solar seasons, Islamic months move through different seasons over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Muharram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first month of the Hijri Calendar, while <\/span><b>Ramadan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the ninth month and is significant for fasting and religious observances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hijri Calendar is primarily used to determine important <\/span><b>Islamic religious dates and festivals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Gregorian Calendar<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Gregorian Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was introduced in <\/span><b>October 1582<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Pope Gregory XIII<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It replaced the Julian Calendar because the earlier system had accumulated an error in calculating the length of the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>solar calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and begins on <\/span><b>January 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A normal year contains 365 days, while a leap year contains 366 days through the addition of an extra day in February.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gregorian Calendar is the most widely used <\/span><b>civil calendar in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In India, it is commonly used for administrative, commercial, educational, legal and everyday purposes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India therefore uses the Gregorian Calendar alongside several traditional calendars, allowing both <\/span><b>modern civil requirements and cultural traditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to continue.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>National Calendar of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Saka Calendar is the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-calendar-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>National Calendar of India<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was adopted by the Government of India following the recommendations of the <\/span><b>Calendar Reform Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headed by <\/span><b>Prof. Meghnad Saha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Calendar Reform Committee was established in <\/span><b>1952<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to examine the different calendar systems used across India and develop a uniform and scientifically accurate calendar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After extensive study, the committee recommended a <\/span><b>unified national calendar based on the Saka Era<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Government accepted the recommendations and introduced the National Calendar from <\/span><b>22 March 1957<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, corresponding to <\/span><b>Chaitra 1, 1879 Saka Era<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Calendar is based on the <\/span><b>Saka Era, which began in 78 CE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Chaitra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is its first month, followed by months such as Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha and others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a normal year, <\/span><b>Chaitra has 30 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while in a leap year it has 31 days. The remaining months have a fixed number of days according to the structure of the Saka Calendar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>March 22<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marks the beginning of the Saka year in a normal Gregorian year, while <\/span><b>March 21<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marks the beginning in a Gregorian leap year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Calendar is used along with the <\/span><b>Gregorian Calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for specific official purposes. These include the <\/span><b>Gazette of India, All India Radio news broadcasts, government calendars and government communications issued for the public<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The adoption of the Saka Calendar helped provide a <\/span><b>uniform calendar system for official purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while preserving the traditional Indian system of timekeeping.
