{"id":121448,"date":"2026-08-28T15:07:59","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T09:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=121448"},"modified":"2026-08-28T15:07:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T09:37:59","slug":"safe-defence-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/safe-defence-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"SAFE Defence Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>SAFE Defence Fund Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Italian government has requested \u20ac8 billion ($9.3 billion) from the European Union&#8217;s SAFE defence funding \u200bprogramme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About SAFE Defence Fund<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Security Action for Europe (SAFE)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instrument is a <\/span><b>joint borrowing scheme backed by the European Union (EU).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regulation setting up the SAFE <\/span><b>instrument entered<\/b> <b>into force on 29 May 2025.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aimed at <\/span><b>boosting the bloc&#8217;s defence \u200b<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capabilities and helping member states meet new, \u2060more ambitious <\/span><b>NATO spending targets.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Focus:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The assistance helps EU member states <\/span><b>make rapid and significant increases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their <\/span><b>defence investments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through common procurement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Loan:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Through this instrument, the EU is providing financial assistance in the form of loans <\/span><b>worth up to \u20ac150 billion.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instrument finances urgent and large-scale investments in the European defence technological and industrial base.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allocation of the <\/span><b>budget is demand-driven.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disbursements take the <\/span><b>form of competitively priced long-maturity loans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to be repaid by the beneficiary EU member states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While only Member States can obtain SAFE loans, the following countries <\/span><b>may participate in common procurement:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU acceding, candidate, and potential candidate countries;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have <\/span><b>signed Security and Defence Partnerships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the EU, such as Albania, Canada, <\/span><b>India (signed in 2026),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Japan, Moldova, North Macedonia, Norway, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/italy-asks-eu-8-billion-safe-defence-funds-2026-08-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAFE Defence Fund instrument is a joint borrowing scheme backed by the European Union (EU).
