The 57 day pilgrimage concluded on Raksha Bandhan with the traditional arrival of Chhari Mubarak at the Holy Cave. More than 4.8 lakh devotees undertook the pilgrimage through the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. Security was strengthened through technology, surveillance, route regulation and coordinated deployment of security agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Amarnath Yatra?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Amarnath Yatra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as <\/span><b>Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 is an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave in the Kashmir Himalayas. The cave is associated with Lord Shiva and contains a naturally formed ice stalagmite worshipped as the Shiva Lingam. The pilgrimage is managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, constituted under an Act of the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature in 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Amarnath Yatra 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amarnath Yatra 2026 involved registration, health certification, biometric verification, RFID tracking, route management and coordinated security arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yatra duration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilgrimage started on 3 July 2026 and formally ended on 28 August 2026, completing a scheduled period of 57 days. The concluding ceremony was marked by Chhari Mubarak reaching the Holy Cave.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Managing authority: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) managed the pilgrimage and pilgrim facilities. The Board was established through The Jammu and Kashmir Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Act 2000 and is headed by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eligibility: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrims below 13 years or above 70 years were not permitted to register. Women with more than six weeks of pregnancy were also excluded from registration, even with a health certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Health certificate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every pilgrim required a valid Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Routes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two principal pilgrimage axes were the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter but steeper Baltal route. The Baltal route covers about 14 km to the Holy Cave. The Pahalgam route is considerably longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Mount Amarnath<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Mount Amarnath <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forms part of the Himalayas and is associated with the high altitude Holy Cave that remains the principal destination of the annual pilgrimage.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Amarnath is located in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/himalayan-region-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Himalayas<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Jammu and Kashmir. It lies south of <\/span><b>Zojila <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and west of <\/span><b>Machoi <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/glacial-landforms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glacier<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the Amarnath region connected to the Sonamarg and Baltal areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Height: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Amarnath has a peak elevation of about 5,186 metres (17,014 ft).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drainage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its meltwaters contribute to the <\/span><b>Sind River System <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near Baltal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Holy Cave: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amarnath Cave is an ice cave situated on the southern face of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mountain-ranges-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>mountain<\/strong><\/a>. The cave is the main religious destination of the annual summer pilgrimage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Height of Amarnath Cave: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Holy Cave is situated much lower, at approximately 3,800 metres, making the pilgrimage a high altitude journey.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ice formation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside the cave, a naturally formed ice stalagmite is worshipped as the ice Lingam representing Lord Shiva. Devotees traditionally associate its waxing and waning with the lunar cycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ascent and Restrictions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Amarnath is generally not climbed because of its religious significance. However, pilgrimage access is restricted to the designated Holy Cave routes and authorised Yatra movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Amarnath Yatra 2026 Security Aspects<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amarnath Yatra 2026 adopted a multi layered security model involving Jammu and Kashmir Police, CAPFs, intelligence agencies and modern surveillance systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>No flying zone: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pahalgam and Baltal axes were declared No Flying Zones from 1 July 2026 until completion of the Yatra. Consequently, helicopter services for pilgrim travel were unavailable during Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) 2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Biometric verification: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/aadhaar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Aadhaar <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based biometric eKYC and system generated permits through the NIC portal. A manual, webcam based verification option was available if biometric authentication failed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>RFID tracking: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registered pilgrims were required to collect and wear an RFID card before beginning the journey. The card was mandatory for crossing the designated access control points.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Multi layered grid: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security agencies were directed to maintain an integrated security grid along the pilgrimage route. Drones, CCTV systems and advanced monitoring technologies were used to strengthen preventive security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weather based movement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movement of pilgrim batches was regulated according to prevailing weather conditions and forecasts. This was important because the route passes through vulnerable high altitude Himalayan terrain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Local registration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local persons and animals associated with the pilgrimage were brought under a registration system. QR code enabled identity cards were planned for registered local participants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Essential services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security planning also covered pilgrim registration, accommodation, healthcare and disaster management. Senior officers of CAPFs and J&amp;K Police were stationed at camps to continuously monitor arrangements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Project Hawk Eye<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Hawk Eye was launched by Anantnag Police as a technology driven surveillance framework for continuous security monitoring during Amarnath Yatra 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Implementing agency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Hawk Eye was conceptualised and implemented by the Anantnag District Police of Jammu and Kashmir Police. It combined technology based surveillance with specialised security personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drone surveillance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five drones were deployed at important locations along the route. They provided real time aerial surveillance and helped ground forces assess developing situations quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>CCTV network: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A network of 416 high resolution CCTV cameras was installed at critical locations. The system enabled continuous ground level monitoring of sensitive stretches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Facial recognition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/facial-recognition-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facial Recognition System<\/a><\/strong> infrastructure was installed at critical points. It supported real time identification and detection of suspicious movements as part of preventive security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Machan Morchas: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 elevated observation posts, known as Machan Morchas, were established at vulnerable and sensitive locations. They strengthened visibility and ground level area monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sniper teams: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 specially trained sniper teams were positioned at designated points. Their deployment strengthened tactical preparedness and rapid response capability in vulnerable high altitude areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Preventive security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Hawk Eye shifted the security approach towards early detection and prevention.
