Built across the <\/span><b>Ravi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the dam forms the scenic <\/span><b>Chamera Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and plays an important role in hydroelectric power generation in the region. The Chamera project has been developed in different stages, with Chamera-I, Chamera-II and Chamera-III together contributing significantly to the area&#8217;s electricity supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Chamera Dam Location, History &amp; Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chamera Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is located near <\/span><b>Dalhousie in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is constructed across the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ravi-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Ravi River<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its reservoir is popularly known as <\/span><b>Chamera Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam was opened in <\/span><b>1994<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and became an important part of the hydroelectric development of the Ravi River basin. The project was developed in multiple stages to increase electricity generation capacity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first stage, <\/span><b>Chamera-I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was completed with an installed capacity of <\/span><b>540 MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generated through three units of 180 MW each.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second stage, <\/span><b>Chamera-II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has a capacity of <\/span><b>300 MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with three generating units of 100 MW each.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third stage, <\/span><b>Chamera-III<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, became operational from <\/span><b>2012<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has an installed capacity of <\/span><b>231 MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generated through three units of 77 MW each.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chamera Dam and its surrounding lake have also developed into an important attraction for visitors travelling to the Chamba and Dalhousie region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Chamera Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a height of around <\/span><b>140 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and extends for approximately <\/span><b>295 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in length. It has a catchment area of about <\/span><b>472.5 square kilometres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The water level of <\/span><b>Chamera Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> varies between approximately <\/span><b>747 metres and 763 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the conditions and inflow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One distinctive feature of Chamera Lake is the reported <\/span><b>absence of aquatic life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has made the reservoir suitable for several recreational and water-based activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chamera Dam Hydroelectric Power Project and Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Chamera Hydroelectric Power Project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important for generating electricity from the water resources of the Ravi River.
