


{"id":122158,"date":"2026-09-01T14:57:47","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T09:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=122158"},"modified":"2026-09-01T14:57:47","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T09:27:47","slug":"liocheles-gracilipalpus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/liocheles-gracilipalpus\/","title":{"rendered":"Liocheles gracilipalpus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Liocheles gracilipalpus Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team of researchers recently discovered and formally described a new species of scorpion named liocheles gracilipalpus from the Shivalik Hills of Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Liocheles gracilipalpus<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a new species of <\/span><b>scorpion <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belonging to the Hormuridae family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was discovered from the <\/span><b>Shivalik Hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Reasi district in <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at an elevation of 1,655 metres above sea level.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name Liocheles gracilipalpus refers directly to its distinctive anatomy, with \u2018\u2019<\/span><b>gracilis\u2019\u2019 meaning \u2018\u2019slender\u2019\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>palpus referring to the pedipalp.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had <\/span><b>unusually long and slender pedipalps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the <\/span><b>pincer-like appendages characteristic of scorpions.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>relatively large<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its genus, measuring between 34.8 and 43.2 mm in total length.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its body ranges from <\/span><b>greyish brown to dark brown,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while the <\/span><b>legs and tail are lighter in colour.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers also observed marked <\/span><b>sexual dimorphism,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with differences between males and females particularly evident in the structure of the pedipalps.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was found <\/span><b>beneath flat rocks near a man-made wall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the type locality.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species appeared to be r<\/span><b>elatively abundant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there and was recorded across an elevation range extending from 1,655 metres down to Reasi town, located at around 600 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the scorpion was <\/span><b>not restricted to undisturbed natural habitats. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers observed individuals in <\/span><b>human-inhabited areas,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including wood-storage sheds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the latest finding, L. australasiae, L. nigripes and L. schalleri were among the species of the genus recorded from India.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/himachal\/beneath-the-rocks\/amp\/?utm=relatedarticles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>TRIB<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Liocheles gracilipalpus is a new species of scorpion belonging to the Hormuridae family.
