His scientific journey is notable for his transition from physics to biology and his pioneering work in understanding the ribosome at the atomic level.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Venkatraman Ramakrishnan Biography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was born in <\/span><b>1952 in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ancient temple town known for the Nataraja Temple. His father, <\/span><b>C. V. Ramakrishnan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was a scientist, while his mother, <\/span><b>R. Rajalakshmi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taught at Annamalai University. During his childhood, his family spent periods in India and abroad because of his parents&#8217; academic and research commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramakrishnan initially pursued <\/span><b>physics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but his scientific interests gradually shifted towards biology. This transition ultimately led him to the study of ribosomes, one of the most important molecular machines in living cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Venkatraman Ramakrishnan Education<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramakrishnan completed his <\/span><b>Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Physics from Baroda University in 1971<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He later moved to the United States and obtained a <\/span><b>PhD in Physics from Ohio University in 1976<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After completing his doctorate, he recognised that he needed a stronger foundation in biology to pursue the questions that interested him. He therefore spent about two years studying biology at the <\/span><b>University of California, San Diego<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This change in academic direction became an important turning point in his career. It reads the genetic information carried by <\/span><b>messenger RNA (mRNA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and uses it to assemble amino acids into proteins. Ribosomes consist mainly of <\/span><b>ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and proteins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have two subunits that work together during translation.
