{"id":12246,"date":"2023-06-19T05:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-06-18T23:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12246"},"modified":"2025-03-30T08:14:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T02:44:31","slug":"gulf-of-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulf of California"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Gulf of California:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Gulf of California, <strong>also called the Sea of Cortez<\/strong> is a <strong>large inlet of the eastern Pacific Ocean<\/strong> along the <strong>northwestern coast of Mexico<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>separates the mountainous Lower California Peninsula<\/strong>\/Baja California Peninsula <strong>in the west from the states of Sonora and Sinaloa<\/strong> on the mainland <strong>of Mexico in the east.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Geography<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It covers an <strong>area of 160,000 sq. km<\/strong> and has a <strong>long coastline of approximately 4,000km.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>about 1,126km long<\/strong> and has a <strong>maximum width ranging between 48 to 241km.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Gulf is <strong>divided into two portions<\/strong> and is <strong>separated by a narrowing that is marked by the islands of Tibur\u00f3n and Angel de la Guard<\/strong>a.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>northern portion is relatively shallow<\/strong>, with a mean depth of 180m, while the <strong>southern portion contains many depressions and the deepest<\/strong> of these depressions <strong>reaches a maximum depth of over 3,000m.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>head of the gulf is dominated by the large Colorado River Delta<\/strong> through which the <strong>Colorado River drains into the Gulf.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>long coastline<\/strong> of the gulf <strong>is extremely irregular and forms numerous small bays.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geology<\/strong>: The Gulf of California was c<strong>reated around 5.3 million years ago due to the movement of tectonic plates<\/strong> that separated the Baja California Peninsula from the North American Plate.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Islands<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>There are about <strong>37 major islands<\/strong> in the Gulf of California that is <strong>mostly located<\/strong> <strong>on its western side.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is believed that these <strong>islands were created due to volcanic eruptions<\/strong> and several of these <strong>islands are home to volcanoes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Some of the <strong>major islands include the Isla \u00c1ngel de la Guarda, Isla Tibur\u00f3n, Islas<\/strong> Mar\u00edas, Isla Partida, Islas San Francisco, Isla Coronados, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate<\/strong>: Due to the presence of an uninterrupted chain of mountains on the Baja California Peninsula, the Gulf of California <strong>experiences a \u2018continental\u2019 climate rather than an \u2018oceanic\u2019 climate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Gulf?<\/h3>\n<p>The Gulf is a portion of the sea that is almost surrounded by land except one narrow opening. Gulfs are formed when a giant rock collapses or when a piece of land sinks. This causes a big indentation in the area, and the water eventually fills it up.
