He founded <\/span><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1980 and played an important role in building national and international movements against child labour. In 2014, he was jointly awarded the <\/span><b>Nobel Peace Prize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Malala Yousafzai for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kailash Satyarthi Early Life &amp; Education<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kailash Satyarthi was born on <\/span><b>11 January 1954 in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and developed an early concern for children deprived of education. As a young student, he was deeply affected by seeing children working instead of attending school. He studied <\/span><b>Electrical Engineering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and initially pursued a career in engineering. He believed that children should be in <\/span><b>schools rather than workplaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that poverty should not deprive them of their childhood and education. In <\/span><b>1980<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he left his engineering profession and dedicated his life to the fight against <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/child-labour-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">child labour<\/a>, bonded labour, trafficking and exploitation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while promoting <\/span><b>education and children&#8217;s rights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was founded by <\/span><b>Kailash Satyarthi in 1980<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to protect children from <\/span><b>child labour, bonded labour, trafficking and exploitation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The movement works to <\/span><b>rescue and rehabilitate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children trapped in exploitative conditions and help them return to education and a safe childhood. It also uses <\/span><b>legal action, public awareness and community mobilisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to strengthen child protection. Over the years, BBA has become an important grassroots movement advocating for <\/span><b>children&#8217;s rights, freedom, dignity and education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kailash Satyarthi and the Fight Against Child Labour<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kailash Satyarthi has spent decades fighting <\/span><b>child labour, bonded labour, trafficking and exploitation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working to ensure that children are freed from forced work and given access to <\/span><b>education, dignity and a safe childhood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through grassroots movements, rescue operations, legal advocacy and international campaigns, he helped make child labour a major global human-rights concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Founded the organisation in <\/span><b>1980<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to combat child labour and child exploitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child Rescue:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Led efforts to <\/span><b>rescue children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from factories, workshops, mines, domestic servitude and other exploitative conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rehabilitation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Focused on providing rescued children with <\/span><b>education, rehabilitation and opportunities for a better future<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global March Against Child Labour:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Led the <\/span><b>1998 Global March<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which mobilised people across <\/span><b>103 countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against child labour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>International Action:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His advocacy contributed to global momentum behind <\/span><b>ILO Convention No. 182<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the worst forms of child labour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Education as a Solution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Promoted <\/span><b>universal and quality education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a key means of breaking the cycle of poverty and child labour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ethical Production:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Promoted initiatives such as <\/span><b>GoodWeave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to encourage child-labour-free supply chains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>ILO Convention No. 182 and Worst Forms of Child Labour<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls for immediate and effective measures to prohibit and eliminate the worst forms of child labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satyarthi and the Global March Against Child Labour were important forces in building international support for such a convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The convention focuses on eliminating forms of child labour involving particularly severe exploitation, including <\/span><b>slavery, trafficking, forced labour and hazardous work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kailash Satyarthi and the Right to Education in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satyarthi also played a role in mobilising public and political support for <\/span><b>free and compulsory education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>2001<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he led the <\/span><b>Shiksha Yatra (Education March)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to generate public support for making education a fundamental right. His advocacy contributed to the broader movement that eventually resulted in the <\/span><b>86th Constitutional Amendment Act 2002<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which inserted <\/span><b>Article 21A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the Constitution. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/article-21-of-indian-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\">Article 21A<\/a><\/strong> provides for <\/span><b>free and compulsory education for children between 6 and 14 years of age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subsequently provided the legislative framework for implementing this constitutional guarantee.
