At least 739 million youth and adults lacked basic literacy skills in 2024. In 2023, 272 million children and adolescents were out of school, while four in ten children were not achieving minimum reading proficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Literacy Day 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>International Literacy Day 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marks the <\/span><b>60th Anniversary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the global observance. UNESCO will hold the global celebration on 8-9 September 2026 in Mexico with the Government of Mexico. The programme will include the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes and discussions on future literacy policies. The event will be hybrid and livestreamed in English, French and Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Literacy Day Theme 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>International Literacy Day Theme 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>\u201cLiteracy for people, the planet and prosperity.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It connects literacy with inclusion, sustainable development, livelihoods and economic opportunities. The theme also supports reflection on global progress since 2015. It highlights the need for effective policies, partnerships and practices to address persistent and emerging literacy challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Literacy Day History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>International Literacy Day History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began with the 1965 World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy in Tehran, Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1965 Conference: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy in Tehran created the idea of a dedicated global literacy observance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UNESCO Proclamation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/unesco\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNESCO<\/strong><\/a> proclaimed International Literacy Day on 26 October 1966 during its 14th General Conference session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First Observance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first International Literacy Day was observed on 8 September 1967 to underline literacy\u2019s importance for individuals, communities and societies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UN Recognition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic and Social Council resolution 1276(LIII) endorsed the observance in 1967, strengthening international attention towards literacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>International Literacy Year (1990):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/united-nations-general-assembly-unga\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN General Assembly<\/a><\/strong> declared <\/span><b>1990<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the <\/span><b>\u201cInternational Literacy Year\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to strengthen worldwide action for literacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Literacy Decade (2003-2012): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>United Nations Literacy Decade covered 2003-2012<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and supported wider international efforts to improve literacy and education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Earlier Themes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Themes included \u201cLiteracy and Health\u201d in 2007-2008, \u201cLiteracy and Empowerment\u201d in 2009-2010 and \u201cLiteracy and Peace\u201d in 2011-2012,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTransforming Literacy Learning Spaces\u201d was the 2022 theme, followed by themes on transition and sustainability in 2023 and multilingual education in 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>2025 Theme: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>International Literacy Day Theme 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was \u201cPromoting literacy in the digital era,\u201d focusing on technology enabled literacy and lifelong learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Literacy Day Celebrations 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Literacy Day Celebrations 2026 will focus on global progress, emerging challenges, partnerships and practical approaches that strengthen literacy for people and sustainable societies.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global Event: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO and the Government of Mexico will organise the main celebration on 8-9 September 2026, bringing education leaders, governments and literacy stakeholders together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mexico Programme: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The international event will take place in Mexico, with the listed event programme scheduled in Chiapas and arranged in a hybrid format.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global Participation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministers of Education, UNESCO Member State representatives, civil society organisations, NGOs, foundations, universities, researchers, educators and learners will participate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>International Literacy Day Activities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities will include discussions, experience sharing, recognition of effective literacy programmes and efforts to shape future literacy agendas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Local Celebrations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries will conduct national, regional and local programmes to promote literacy.
