It also recognises the contribution of coconut farmers and promotes the potential of coconut as an important agricultural resource.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>World Coconut Day History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>World Coconut Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is observed every year on <\/span><b>September 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several countries of the <\/span><b>Asia-Pacific region, including India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The day highlights the importance of coconut and its wide range of uses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first <\/span><b>World Coconut Day was celebrated on September 2, 2009<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The date is observed to mark the foundation day of the <\/span><b>Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>APCC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an intergovernmental organisation established in <\/span><b>1969<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support the sustainable development of the coconut sector in the Asia-Pacific region. Its headquarters is in <\/span><b>Jakarta, Indonesia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main purpose of World Coconut Day is to create awareness about the <\/span><b>economic, nutritional and industrial importance of coconut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and encourage investment in the coconut sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/coconut\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Coconut<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cultivation provides livelihood opportunities to millions of farmers and workers. The industry also supports activities related to <\/span><b>food processing, oil production, coir products and other value-added products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut is scientifically known as <\/span><b>Cocos nucifera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is often called the <\/span><b>\u201cTree of Life\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because almost every part of the plant can be used in different ways.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>World Coconut Day Theme and Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>theme of World Coconut Day 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>\u201cCoconuts in Times of Uncertainty: Securing Food, Energy, and Livelihoods.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme highlights the importance of coconut in ensuring <\/span><b>food security, energy resources and sustainable livelihoods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Coconut Day aims to highlight the <\/span><b>multiple benefits and uses of coconut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in everyday life, agriculture, food, industry and rural livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut is a nutritious food containing <\/span><b>minerals, fibre, protein and certain B vitamins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coconut water, milk and oil are widely used in food and beverages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different parts of the coconut plant have many practical uses. <\/span><b>Coir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the husk is used to make ropes, mats and other products, while coconut shells can be used for charcoal and other purposes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coconut tree is particularly important in tropical regions because it provides both <\/span><b>food and income<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while supporting various small-scale industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For healthy coconut growth, a <\/span><b>warm and humid tropical climate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is preferred. An annual rainfall of around <\/span><b>1,300-2,300 mm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an average temperature of about <\/span><b>27\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are considered suitable conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Coconut Sector in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indias-coconut-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Coconut Sector in India<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important for <\/span><b>farmers, rural livelihoods, agriculture and exports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The following sections cover its <\/span><b>production, economic importance and government support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Livelihood and Cultural Importance<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>coconut sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays an important role in India\u2019s rural economy, agriculture and cultural traditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><b>30 million people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including nearly <\/span><b>10 million farmers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depend on coconut cultivation and related activities for their livelihood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut is traditionally known as <\/span><b>\u201cKalpavriksha\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the <\/span><b>tree of life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because almost every part of the tree can be used. It provides <\/span><b>food, drinking water, oil, fibre, timber, fuel and other raw materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut cultivation in India has a history of nearly <\/span><b>three thousand years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and continues to support rural employment and income.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most coconut growers are <\/span><b>small and marginal farmers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making the sector important for inclusive rural development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coconut is also finding new areas of cultivation. For example, farmers in <\/span><b>Chhattisgarh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have started adopting coconut cultivation as an alternative livelihood opportunity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has an important position in the <\/span><b>global coconut economy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It ranks <\/span><b>first in coconut production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>third in cultivation area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, accounting for about <\/span><b>31.24% of global production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>17.90% of the global area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to DA&amp;FW data, India produced around <\/span><b>20,301.22 million coconuts in 2024-25<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from nearly <\/span><b>2.19 million hectares<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with an average productivity of <\/span><b>9,249 nuts per hectare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kerala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the largest area under coconut cultivation, covering around <\/span><b>7.54 lakh hectares<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and producing about <\/span><b>5,149.87 million nuts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads in production, while <\/span><b>Andhra Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the highest productivity, followed by <\/span><b>West Bengal and Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Coconut Production, Exports and Value-Added Products<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coconut sector has become an important part of India\u2019s <\/span><b>agricultural export economy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coconut products are now exported not only as traditional commodities but also as a wide range of <\/span><b>value-added products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s coconut product exports reached around <\/span><b>\u20b97,038.35 crore (USD 794.70 million) in 2025-26<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, registering a <\/span><b>62% increase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the previous year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growth is significant compared with <\/span><b>2001-02<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when coconut product exports were only around <\/span><b>\u20b925.3 crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and were mainly limited to products such as coconut oil, coconut, desiccated coconut and coconut shell charcoal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, India\u2019s export basket has become more diverse. Major products now include <\/span><b>virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water, activated carbon, copra, fresh or frozen coconut and desiccated coconut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Activated carbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has remained one of the major products in India\u2019s coconut export basket. Indian coconut products are now reaching markets across the <\/span><b>Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Australia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the last five years, important trading partners have included the <\/span><b>USA, UAE, Sri Lanka, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government aims to strengthen India\u2019s export capacity, with targets of <\/span><b>USD 2 trillion in exports by 2030<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>USD 21 trillion by 2047<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The expanding coconut export sector can contribute to these broader goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government follows a <\/span><b>multi-pronged approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support the coconut sector. This includes <\/span><b>Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, development schemes, skill-building programmes, enterprise promotion and support across the coconut value chain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Government Schemes for Coconut Cultivation and Farmer Support<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Copra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the dried kernel of coconut, is one of the <\/span><b>22 mandated agricultural crops covered under the MSP system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. India mainly produces two types &#8211; <\/span><b>milling copra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>ball copra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milling copra is mainly used for <\/span><b>oil extraction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while ball copra is used as an edible dry fruit and also for <\/span><b>religious purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>NAFED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>NCCF<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> act as the <\/span><b>Central Nodal Agencies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for copra procurement, while suitable state-level agencies also support procurement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/coconut-development-board\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Coconut Development Board<\/b><\/a><b> (CDB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implements several schemes to improve coconut cultivation, increase productivity, provide quality planting material, encourage technology adoption and strengthen markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <\/span><b>Demonstration Cum Seed Production Farm (DSPF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programme, new farms demonstrate scientific cultivation practices and produce quality coconut seedlings. During <\/span><b>2025-26<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, around <\/span><b>2.41 lakh quality seedlings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were produced through <\/span><b>11 DSPFs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Nucleus Coconut Seed Garden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scheme supports the production of improved and quality planting material. During 2025-26, <\/span><b>\u20b924 lakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was allocated, of which <\/span><b>\u20b920.29 lakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was utilised.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <\/span><b>Small Coconut Nursery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scheme, assistance was given to establish <\/span><b>12 new nurseries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a combined annual capacity of around <\/span><b>1.06 lakh seedlings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Support was also provided for maintaining <\/span><b>6 existing nurseries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Accreditation and Rating of Coconut Nurseries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative helps ensure that farmers receive <\/span><b>genuine and quality planting material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During 2025-26, <\/span><b>\u20b9239.35 lakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was provided to eligible public-sector nurseries, including <\/span><b>State Departments, State Agricultural Universities, PSUs, KVKs and CDB seed production farms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This supported the production of around <\/span><b>11.97 lakh quality planting materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enough for new plantations over an estimated <\/span><b>6,850-7,500 hectares<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To expand coconut cultivation, the Government provides <\/span><b>financial assistance and technical support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for planting coconut in suitable new areas. The programme also aims to improve the productivity of existing coconut-growing regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the area expansion programme, financial assistance of <\/span><b>\u20b956,000 per hectare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is provided for planting coconut seedlings in new areas.
