The ranking highlights Ladakh\u2019s importance as a high-altitude habitat for the elusive<\/span><b> \u201cGhost of the Mountains.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wildlife Experience Index<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Wildlife Experience Index<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assessed 30 wildlife experiences using six criteria &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rarity, remoteness, conservation importance, exclusivity, accessibility and encounter potential.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda\/Uganda ranked first<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by <\/span><b>emperor penguin expeditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Antarctica and <\/span><b>saiga antelope trips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kazakhstan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Snow leopard tracking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in<\/span><b> Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranked fourth with a <\/span><b>score of 85.5\/100.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight of the top 10 experiences involve threatened species, highlighting the growing interest in wildlife experiences linked to rare species and conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Snow Leopard Trekking in Ladakh<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Snow leopard trekking in Ladakh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is centred around the high-altitude valleys of Hemis National Park, particularly the Rumbak, Uley and Shang valleys.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November to March is considered the prime period for tracking as prey such as<\/span><b> bharal (blue sheep) and Asiatic ibex<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> move towards lower valleys during winter, increasing the chances of spotting snow leopards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The landscape also supports <\/span><b>Tibetan wolves, red foxes and lynx,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it an important high-altitude wildlife habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Snow Leopard and Its Conservation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>snow leopard (Panthera uncia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a high-altitude predator found across the mountains of Central and South Asia, including the Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan regions of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Found mainly in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, in rugged high-altitude habitats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological role<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: As a top predator, it regulates prey populations and helps maintain the ecological balance of mountain ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Key adaptations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Thick fur, broad furry paws, a long tail and specialised respiratory features help it survive cold, rocky and oxygen-deficient high-altitude environments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Behaviour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is largely solitary and elusive, with individuals occupying large home ranges and using scent marking for communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It mainly feeds on wild ungulates such as bharal and ibex, along with smaller mammals such as marmots, pikas and hares.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Population in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) estimated 718 snow leopards in the country, with the highest population in Ladakh (477).
