{"id":122604,"date":"2026-09-03T14:11:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=122604"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:11:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:41:02","slug":"uparkot-fort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/uparkot-fort\/","title":{"rendered":"Uparkot Fort"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Uparkot Fort Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the festival season, Junagadh\u2019s Uparkot Fort has remained closed to visitors for the third consecutive day after a leopard was spotted inside the historic premises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Uparkot Fort<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an ancient fort located in the city of <\/span><b>Junagadh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is strategically perched at the f<\/span><b>oothills of Girnar Hill.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Uparkot Fort <\/b><b>History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ancient fort is believed to have been <\/span><b>built in 319 BC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>Mauryan emperor Chandragupta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though it has been extended many times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been<\/span><b> inhabited continuously for over 2,000 years.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort was <\/span><b>known previously <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the<\/span><b> Revath Nagri.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been <\/span><b>besieged 16 times,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and legend has it that the fort once withstood a 12-year siege.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Uparkot Fort <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort covers an area of around 70 acres and is <\/span><b>surrounded by a wall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is <\/span><b>over 20 meters high<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some places.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indo-Gothic-designed fort <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has three entries that give way to an ancient Torana. This is a pedestal of sorts, used for auspicious Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist ceremonies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most famous attractions of Uparkot Fort is the <\/span><b>Buddhist caves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which were carved out of the rock by Buddhist monks<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the <\/span><b>2nd century BCE.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These caves are adorned with beautiful <\/span><b>carvings and inscriptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are considered to be some of the <\/span><b>oldest surviving Buddhist caves in India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also<\/span><b> an ancient mosque, a 15th-century Jama Masjid,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which also houses the<\/span><b> tomb of Nuri Shah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in proximity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort also encloses a couple of <\/span><b>temples <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and even <\/span><b>two stepwells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called Adi Chadi, or the Adi Kavi Wav, and the Navghan Kuvo.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><b> huge cannon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of more than fifteen feet is located on the grounds.
