It combines rescue, rehabilitation, education, legal action and community mobilisation. Over four decades, BBA has protected and rehabilitated more than 1,10,000 children and strengthened advocacy for child friendly laws and policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning <\/span><b>Save Childhood Movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was started by Kailash Satyarthi in 1980. Its work is managed through the registered society Association for Voluntary Action (AVA). The movement seeks to identify, liberate, rehabilitate and educate children in servitude through prevention, direct intervention, legal action and mass mobilisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan Objectives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">works to create a child friendly society where children are protected from exploitation, abuse, trafficking and forced labour and receive education, dignity and freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Primary Objective:<\/strong> To eliminate child labour, bonded labour, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/human-trafficking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>trafficking<\/strong><\/a> and exploitation by rescuing affected children and ensuring their rehabilitation, education, dignity and freedom.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vision: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA seeks a child friendly world where every child is free from exploitation and abuse and can access free and quality education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mission: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its mission covers identifying, releasing, rehabilitating and educating children in servitude through prevention, intervention, coalition building, mobilisation and legal action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Core Values: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice, Courage, Compassion, Integrity and Freedom guide BBA\u2019s approach towards child protection, rehabilitation, legal advocacy and social mobilisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strategy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA follows prevention, protection and rehabilitation through community participation, legal enforcement, rescue operations, education and support for affected children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Efforts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bal Mitra Gram model promotes child labour free villages where children attend school and participate through Bal Panchayats recognised by Gram Panchayats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Bachpan Bachao Andolan Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bachpan Bachao Andolan combines grassroots rescue operations with public campaigns, legal intervention and policy advocacy to address child labour and trafficking.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child rescue: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA has rescued more than 88,000 children according to one organisational record, while its broader record reports over 1,10,000 children protected and rehabilitated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rehabilitation centres: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mukti Ashram near Delhi provides immediate shelter, medical care, food, counselling and recreation, while Bal Ashram in Rajasthan supports longer term education and vocational training.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Legal advocacy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA has pursued cases before the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/supreme-court-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Supreme Court<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/high-courts-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High Courts<\/strong><\/a> involving missing children, child labour, trafficking, education and enforcement against establishments employing children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global March: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1998, BBA led the Global March Against Child Labour across 103 countries, helping build international momentum for <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-labour-organisation-ilo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ILO<\/strong><\/a> Convention No. 182.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Education campaign: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2001, BBA led a nationwide campaign involving more than 180 Members of Parliament and a 15,000 km march demanding education as a fundamental right.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child trafficking campaign: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mukti Caravan covered 158 villages across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and Rajasthan, conducting 750 street plays and forming 70 Public Vigilance Committees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Baal Panchayat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA organises Baal Panchayat activities on 12 June, observed as the World Day Against Child Labour, to encourage children\u2019s participation in protection efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Policy contribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBA\u2019s advocacy supported stronger child protection measures, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/child-labour-prohibition-and-regulation-act-1986\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Child Labour Act<\/strong><\/a>, <a employment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Who is Kailash Satyarthi?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kailash-satyarthi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Kailash Satyarthi <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an Indian child rights activist who founded BBA and received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Malala Yousafzai.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satyarthi left his electrical engineering career and began working against child slavery, bonded labour and exploitation through organised child rights activism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His sustained advocacy contributed to support for the Child Labour Act in 1986 and its subsequent amendment in 2016.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His work with the Global March Against <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/child-labour-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Child Labour<\/a><\/strong> helped generate international support for ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, Kailash Satyarthi received the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Malala Yousafzai for their contribution to children\u2019s education and rights.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Status of Children in India 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has made progress in poverty reduction, schooling and institutional healthcare, but children still face serious nutritional, educational, social and climate related vulnerabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child population: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children constitute roughly 32% of India\u2019s demographic in 2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>School enrolment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDISE+ recorded 24.72 crore students from pre primary to higher secondary levels, supported by approximately 1.02 crore teachers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Out of school children: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 46 million children are estimated to remain outside school, with substantial concentration across selected states and disadvantaged communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adolescents: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has the world\u2019s largest adolescent population at 253 million, with every fifth person aged between 10 and 19 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nutrition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of India\u2019s children have been reported as malnourished, while adolescent girls face particularly high risks of undernutrition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/childhood-obesity-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obesity<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>World Health Organization<\/strong><\/a> and World Obesity Atlas 2026 place India second <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/unicef\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNICEF<\/strong><\/a> report released on 16 June 2026 estimates that 411.62 million children face at least two climate or disaster hazards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Multiple hazards: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 234 million children face at least three climate hazards, while drought and extreme heat affect over 158.8 million children together.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Challenges Faced by Children in India:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child protection: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Right to Education Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act remain important legal frameworks for safeguarding children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Child budget: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/union-budget-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Union Budget<\/strong><\/a> allocated \u20b91,32,296.85 crore for child welfare and development schemes, reflecting continued public investment in children.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Digital concerns: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing digital, gaming and social media dependence among young people has raised concerns about behavioural health and responsible technology use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Persistent challenges: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural children, urban poor families, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/scheduled-caste\/\"
