The day is also observed as the <\/span><b>International Day of Charity, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to promote charitable action and voluntary service.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who Was Mother Teresa?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Mother Teresa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a <\/span><b>Catholic nun and social worker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who spent most of her life in India, especially in Kolkata, working with poor and vulnerable people. She became known for caring for people who were sick, homeless, abandoned or living in extreme poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was born as <\/span><b>Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 26 August 1910 <\/span><b>in Skopje, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then part of the<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ottoman-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Ottoman Empire <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and now <\/span><b>in North Macedonia, into an Albanian Catholic family.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the age of 18, she joined the<\/span><b> Sisters of Loreto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Catholic religious congregation that ran schools for girls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>She came to India in 1929 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and began teaching at a convent school in Calcutta.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While continuing her work as a teacher and nun, she took her final religious vows in 1937 and adopted the name Teresa.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also Read:- Mother Teresa (1910-1997), Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Mother Teresa Contribution<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother Teresa later moved from teaching to directly working with Kolkata\u2019s poorest people, which became the central focus of her life\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1948, she left the Loreto convent and began working directly in the poor neighbourhoods of Kolkata.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She cared for people who were sick, dying, homeless or abandoned, particularly those who had little access to care and support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To organise this work on a larger scale, she founded the <\/span><b>Missionaries of Charity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kolkata in 1950.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1952, she established<\/span><b> Nirmal Hriday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a home in Kolkata for terminally ill and destitute people, where they could receive care and die with dignity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1957, the Missionaries of Charity also ran mobile leprosy clinics and a Leprosy Fund to provide treatment and support to people affected by leprosy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organisation began expanding outside India from 1965 and later established homes, schools, hospices and clinics in more than 100 countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Major Awards and Recognition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother Teresa received several important national and international awards for her humanitarian work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Padma Shri (1962)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Awarded by the Government of India for her service to society.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/nobel-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> (1979)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Awarded for her humanitarian work, particularly among the poor and suffering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bharat-ratna-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bharat Ratna<\/a> (1980)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: India\u2019s highest civilian award, recognising her contribution to humanitarian service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also received several other international awards and honours during her lifetime.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Mother Teresa Death and Canonisation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Mother Teresa died in Kolkata on 5 September 1997, at the age of 87.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After her death, the Catholic Church began the process of recognising her as a saint.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1999, the Vatican began the official process of examining her life and work for sainthood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified her, giving her the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Beatification was the step that came before declaring her a saint.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Pope Francis declared her a saint and gave her the title Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
