


{"id":12274,"date":"2025-04-22T14:57:21","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T09:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12274"},"modified":"2025-05-28T13:27:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T07:57:59","slug":"hindu-kush-himalayas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hindu-kush-himalayas\/","title":{"rendered":"Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Hindu Kush Himalaya Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region recorded its lowest snow persistence in 23 years during the 2024\u20132025 winter, according to a new report published recently.<\/p>\n<h2>About Hindu Kush Himalaya<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The HKH mountains extend around<strong>\u00a03,500 km over eight countries<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Pakistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It covers an area of approximately 4.2 million sq.km.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It runs northeast to southwest\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>divides the valley of the Amu Darya\u00a0<\/strong>(the ancient Oxus River) to the north f<strong>rom the Indus River valley<\/strong>\u00a0to the south.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>To the east<\/strong>\u00a0the Hindu Kush\u00a0<strong>buttresses the Pamir range<\/strong>\u00a0near the point where the borders of China, Pakistani-administered Kashmir, and Afghanistan meet, after which it\u00a0<strong>runs southwest through Pakistan and into Afghanistan<\/strong>, finally\u00a0<strong>merging into minor ranges in western Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The range has<strong>\u00a0numerous high snow-capped peaks<\/strong>, with the\u00a0<strong>highest point\u00a0<\/strong>being\u00a0<strong>Tirich Mir or Terichmir a<\/strong>t 7,708 meters (25,289 ft)\u00a0<strong>in Chitral, Pakistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>considered the Third Pole<\/strong>\u00a0(after the North and South Poles) and has significant implications for climate.<\/li>\n<li>The HKH forms the\u00a0<strong>largest area of permanent ice cover outside of the North and South Poles<\/strong>\u00a0and is home to 4 global biodiversity hotspots.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The HKH region is the\u00a0<strong>source of ten large Asian river\u00a0<\/strong>systems: the\u00a0<strong>Amu Darya, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong, Yangtse, Yellow River, and Tarim.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The basins of these rivers provide water to 1.9 billion people, a fourth of the world\u2019s population.<\/li>\n<li>Contains diverse ecosystems: glaciers, alpine meadows, forests, wetlands, and grasslands.<\/li>\n<li>HKH may be divided into\u00a0<strong>three main sections: t<\/strong>he\u00a0<strong>eastern\u00a0<\/strong>Hindu Kush, the\u00a0<strong>central\u00a0<\/strong>Hindu Kush, and the\u00a0<strong>western\u00a0<\/strong>Hindu Kush, also\u00a0<strong>known as the B\u0101b\u0101 Mountains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>inner valleys<\/strong>\u00a0of the Hindu Kush\u00a0<strong>see little rain and have desert vegetation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/dehradun\/south-asian-rivers-at-risk-as-hindu-kush-himalaya-snow-cover-hits-23-year-low\/articleshow\/120490990.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TOI<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) mountains extend around 3,500 km over eight countries &#8211;
