Visvesvaraya<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was born on 15 September 1861 at Muddenahalli in present-day Karnataka.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has observed Engineers\u2019 Day <\/span><b>since 1968<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his honour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why is Engineers\u2019 Day Celebrated?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Engineers\u2019 Day 2026 highlights the important role of engineering in India&#8217;s economic and technological development.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It recognises the contribution of engineers to infrastructure, industry, technology and public welfare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It promotes innovation, scientific thinking and technical problem-solving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It highlights the importance of engineering in addressing challenges related to sustainability, energy, water and emerging technologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About Sir M. Visvesvaraya<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861-1962)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a renowned civil engineer, administrator and statesman who played an important role in India\u2019s infrastructure and industrial development. He began his career in the <\/span><b>Bombay Public Works Department<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1884 and later served as the <\/span><b>Diwan of Mysore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 1912 to 1918, where he promoted industrialisation, technical education and economic development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sir M. Visvesvaraya Contributions\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His contributions covered water management, irrigation, flood control, industrialisation and economic development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He developed and patented automatic water-control floodgates, first installed at <\/span><b>Khadakvasla Reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1903.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He played a major role in the development of the<\/span><b> Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across the <\/span><b>Cauvery River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the 1908 Musi floods, he provided technical advice for improving flood protection in Hyderabad.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Diwan of Mysore, he promoted industries such as the <\/span><b>Mysore Iron and Steel Works <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Bhadravati and the Mysore Soap Factory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through his writings, including <\/span><b>Reconstructing India and Planned Economy for India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he advocated industrialisation, technical education and planned development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>In recognition of his contribution to nation-building, he was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bharat-ratna-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bharat Ratna<\/a> in 1955<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Engineers\u2019 Day 2026 is celebrated on 15 September to honour Sir M.
