Union Minister Jitendra Singh<\/strong> has launched Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0<\/strong>, a week-long nationwide campaign<\/strong> aimed at promoting cleaner beaches, reducing marine pollution, and ensuring safer oceans<\/strong>. The campaign focuses on strengthening public participation and raising awareness about the need to protect India\u2019s coastal and marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n

What is Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 2026?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar<\/b>, meaning <\/span>\u201cClean Coast, Safe Sea,\u201d<\/b> is a nationwide initiative focused on cleaning India’s coastal areas and addressing the problem of <\/span>marine litter<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The campaign brings together government institutions, local communities and citizens to remove waste from beaches and coastal locations. Importantly, the 2026 campaign also uses citizen participation to <\/span>record and categorise marine litter<\/b>, creating useful information for marine-litter monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 campaign will run from <\/span>13 September to 19 September 2026<\/b>, with the campaign culminating in large-scale beach cleanup activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Organises Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The campaign is organised by the <\/span>Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)<\/b> and coordinated by the <\/span>National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

NCCR is an attached office of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and works on scientific and technical issues related to India’s coastal areas, including <\/span>coastal water quality, marine biodiversity<\/a>, litter, coastal <\/b>ecosystems<\/b><\/a> and coastal hazards<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At individual locations, a <\/span>lead coordinating institution<\/b> conducts the cleanup activities, while institutes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences provide technical coordination.<\/span><\/p>\n
