{"id":122925,"date":"2026-09-05T15:07:39","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T09:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=122925"},"modified":"2026-09-05T15:28:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T09:58:07","slug":"sukhna-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sukhna-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Sukhna Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sukhna Lake Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MSME Development and Facilitation Office (DFO), Ludhiana, and the Chandigarh tourism department recently launched a three-day pilot market access initiative at Sukhna Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sukhna Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an<\/span><b> artificial lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the city of <\/span><b>Chandigarh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the <\/span><b>foothills of the Shivalik hills.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It came into existence in <\/span><b>1958 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when the <\/span><b>Sukhna Choe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><b>seasonal stream originating <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/siwalik-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shivalik Hills<\/a>, was dammed.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially spanning 230 hectares, the <\/span><b>lake\u2019s area diminished <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to approximately 154 hectares by 2007 due to siltation, leading to the <\/span><b>creation of the Sukhna Lake Reserve Forest.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, the <\/span><b>water level dropped<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 5 meters in 1958 to 2 meters by 2004, exacerbated by significant soil erosion from the 4,200-hectare catchment area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> water flowing into the lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is<\/span><b> heavily loaded with silt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Due to higher run-off, there is an <\/span><b>accelerated pace of erosion in the catchment areas,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resulting in the <\/span><b>higher rate of sedimentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the reservoir of Sukhna Lake and streambeds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is<\/span><b> fringed by a golf course to the south<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><b> the famous Nek Chand Rock Garden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Chandigarh to its <\/span><b>west<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is declared<\/span><b> a National\u00a0 Wetland <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the Government of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>During winter,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sukhna Lake transforms into a haven for diverse <\/span><b>migratory birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><b>Siberian ducks, storks, and cranes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hosting around 30 resident and migratory species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is also a <\/span><b>part of the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sukhna Lake has the<\/span><b> longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/cities\/chandigarh-news\/artisans-find-a-new-marketplace-at-chandigarh-s-sukhna-lake-101788552389240.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>HT<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sukhna Lake is an artificial lake located in the city of Chandigarh at the foothills of the Shivalik hills.
