Operation Chakra<\/b> is a series of nationwide operations led by the <\/span>Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)<\/b> to identify and dismantle organised and transnational cybercrime networks. It focuses on cyber-enabled financial frauds, digital arrest scams, mule bank accounts, fake call centres and other forms of online crime.<\/span><\/p>\n

The operation is important for understanding <\/span>cybersecurity, internal security, financial crimes, international cooperation and law enforcement<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why in News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

In <\/span>September 2026<\/b>, the CBI intensified <\/span>Operation Chakra-VI<\/b> against digital arrest fraud networks. The agency conducted searches at <\/span>89 locations across 20 states<\/b> in three cases and arrested three accused involved in receiving, layering and dispersing money obtained through cyber fraud. The three cases involved alleged fraud of <\/span>\u20b942.36 crore<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Operation Chakra-VI<\/b><\/h2>\n

Operation Chakra-VI<\/b> has focused particularly on <\/span>digital arrest scams and the financial infrastructure supporting cyber fraud<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In June 2026, the CBI deployed <\/span>60 special teams<\/b> and conducted coordinated searches across 16 states. Investigators found networks involving <\/span>shell companies and mule bank accounts<\/b>, which were allegedly used to launder proceeds of cybercrime.<\/span><\/p>\n

In September 2026, the operation was expanded further, with searches at <\/span>89 locations across 20 states<\/b> in three digital-arrest cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Digital Arrest Scam?<\/b><\/h2>\n

A <\/span>digital arrest scam<\/b> is a type of cyber fraud in which criminals pretend to be police officers or government officials. They falsely accuse victims of being involved in a crime and threaten them with arrest. The victim is kept on a video or phone call and pressured to transfer money. <\/span>There is no legal concept of \u201cdigital arrest<\/a>\u201d in India.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
