This move focuses on the limitations of the traditional <\/span><b>Mercator projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which makes areas near the poles look much larger while making regions near the Equator appear relatively smaller. The new approach promotes map projections such as <\/span><b>Equal Earth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provide a more balanced representation of the world\u2019s land areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>UN Votes to Adopt New World Map<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/united-nations-general-assembly-unga\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>United Nations General Assembly<\/b><\/a><b> has voted in favour of a new world map<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that presents the size of continents more accurately, especially the African region.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resolution, known as <\/span><b>\u201cCorrect the Map,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sponsored by <\/span><b>Togo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and supported by members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/african-union\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>African Union<\/b><\/a><b> (AU)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It received <\/span><b>164 votes in favour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the <\/span><b>United States was the only country to vote against it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and six countries abstained.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This UN resolution is <\/span><b>non-binding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means countries are not legally required to stop using the traditional map.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it is expected to encourage schools, institutions, governments and digital platforms to adopt more accurate map projections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why Did the UN Propose a New World Map?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major reason behind this proposal, is the <\/span><b>distortion created by the Mercator map<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been widely used since the 16th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the map is useful for navigation, it does not show the actual size of land areas accurately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Mercator projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, created by Flemish cartographer <\/span><b>Gerardus Mercator in 1569<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, makes regions closer to the poles appear much larger than they actually are.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, Africa appears much smaller in comparison with countries and regions in the northern hemisphere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-known example to quote is <\/span><b>Greenland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which appears almost similar in size to Africa on the Mercator map. Whereas in reality, <\/span><b>Africa is around 14 times larger than Greenland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporters of the <\/span><b>\u201cCorrect the Map\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign argue that this visual distortion has influenced how people understand <\/span><b>Africa\u2019s size, resources, population and economic potential<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They believe that maps can shape perceptions of the importance of different regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African countries have also linked the issue to the <\/span><b>legacy of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/colonialism\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>colonialism<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They argue that changing the map can help address long-standing geographical and educational perceptions and present Africa more fairly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Changes in the New World Map<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN-backed resolution promotes the use of the <\/span><b>Equal Earth projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was developed in <\/span><b>2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by an international team of cartographers. It is designed to show the relative size of continents more accurately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>February<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>African Union\u2019s 54 member states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopted the <\/span><b>Equal Earth projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stated that it provides a better representation of the actual size of continents, particularly Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the <\/span><b>Mercator projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Equal Earth map<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not greatly enlarge areas near the poles. This makes the <\/span><b>relative size of Africa and other equatorial regions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> easier to understand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change does not mean that the Mercator projection will immediately disappear. The UN resolution is <\/span><b>not legally enforceable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Mercator map can continue to be used where it is suitable, particularly for <\/span><b>maritime and aerial navigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different map projections have different purposes because it is impossible to represent the curved surface of the Earth perfectly on a flat map.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the new approach focuses on using <\/span><b>more suitable projections for education, public information and other purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Significance of the UN\u2019s New World Map<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision could lead to changes in <\/span><b>school textbooks, educational materials, government documents, media and digital mapping platforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Togo has also indicated plans to encourage wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move is seen by supporters as an effort to provide a <\/span><b>more accurate geographical representation of the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and correct the long-standing visual underrepresentation of Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campaign also highlights the idea that <\/span><b>maps are not simply geographical tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can influence how people perceive the importance, size and position of different countries and continents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>France supported the resolution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and announced that it would move away from the Mercator projection in favour of map representations that are more suitable for particular purposes and closer to actual surface areas. France plans to use the <\/span><b>Eckert IV projection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is similar to the Equal Earth approach in its focus on accurate area representation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>United States opposed the resolution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arguing that the General Assembly should focus on major international issues rather than what it considered a map-related project.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For African countries and campaign groups, the decision represents more than a change in cartography.
