{"id":12298,"date":"2023-06-21T02:32:56","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T21:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=12298"},"modified":"2025-03-30T08:33:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T03:03:12","slug":"what-is-hydrography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-hydrography\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Hydrography?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Hydrography:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrography is the <strong>branch of applied sciences<\/strong> which deals with the <strong>measurement and description of the physical features of oceans<\/strong>, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the <strong>prediction of their change over time.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This is done <strong>mainly with specialised ships and boats operating echo sounders<\/strong> <strong>and sonars<\/strong>, but also using survey aircraft fitted with lasers.<\/li>\n<li>Useful information can also be <strong>derived sometimes from satellite observations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrography <strong>also involves measuring the tide and the currents.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Unlike oceanography, hydrography will i<strong>nclude shore features, natural and manmade, lights and towers <\/strong>that will <strong>aid in fixing a ship&#8217;s position<\/strong>, as well as the physical aspects of the sea and seabed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The most <strong>well-known application<\/strong> of hydrographic information <strong>is for making the nautical charts that all mariners use for navigation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hydrographic information is r<strong>equired for the safe, efficient and sustainable conduct of every human activity<\/strong> that takes place in, on or under the sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>World Hydrography Day:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>marked annually on June 21.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is officially recognised and <strong>implemented by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It serves as a platform to <strong>highlight the crucial work carried out by hydrographers<\/strong> worldwide and to promote the significance of hydrography itself.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to <strong>increase public awareness and understanding of hydrography\u2019s role<\/strong> in ensuring safe and efficient navigation, sustainable marine resource management, and coastal zone development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2023 Theme<\/strong>: \u201c<strong>Hydrography &#8211;
