The building covers 2.85 hectares and represents a distinctive fusion of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and Indian architectural traditions. <\/span><b>UNESCO inscribed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a <\/span><b>World Heritage Site in 2004<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its architectural and cultural value.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is located in southern Mumbai near the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arabian-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arabian Sea<\/a><\/strong> and serves suburban and long distance railway operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Official Name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its present official name is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/chhatrapati-shivaji-maharaj\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj<\/a><\/strong> Terminus (CSMT). It was formerly known as Victoria Terminus (VT) and later Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terminus is situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in the western part of India. It occupies a strategic position within Mumbai\u2019s historic commercial and transport core.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Architect: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British architect F. W. Stevens designed the building after an initial concept associated with Axel Haig. Stevens developed an elaborate Italian Gothic architectural design.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Construction Period: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction began in 1878 and continued for 10 years. The building was completed in 1887 during the 50th anniversary period of Queen Victoria\u2019s reign.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Original Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure was planned as the headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. It replaced the earlier Bori Bunder railway station.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cost: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction cost was approximately Rs. 16.14 lakh. The station was considered one of the largest buildings erected in Asia during its period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Railway Role: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus functions as a major terminal for suburban and long distance trains. The headquarters of Central Railway are also located within the complex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Station Code: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mainline station uses the code CSMT, while the suburban railway code is ST. The older abbreviations VT and CST also remain commonly used.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus reflects Mumbai\u2019s transformation into an important railway, commercial and maritime centre during the colonial period.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bori Bunder Station: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terminus replaced the Bori Bunder railway station. Bori Bunder served the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and was connected with Mumbai\u2019s growing port and trading activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Victoria Terminus: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new station was named Victoria Terminus in 1887. The name commemorated Queen Victoria, who was then Empress of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Renaming in 1996: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 1996, Victoria Terminus was renamed <strong>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus<\/strong>. The new name honoured <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/chhatrapati-shivaji-maharaj\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj<\/strong><\/a>, the 17th century Maratha ruler.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Renaming in 2017: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The station was renamed <strong>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus<\/strong> in July 2017. Italian Gothic influences appear alongside forms inspired by traditional Indian palace architecture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Building Plan: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure has a C shaped plan arranged symmetrically around an east-west axis. It carries a 16 foot &#8211; 6 inch high female figure representing Progress with a flaming torch and wheel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decorative Features: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fa\u00e7ade contains stone carvings, pointed arches, turrets, gargoyles, floral designs, animal figures, human reliefs, stained glass and decorated rose windows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Materials: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local yellow Malad stone forms much of the building. Italian marble, polished granite and white limestone were also used in selected architectural elements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Structural Innovation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central dome used dovetailed ribs and was constructed without conventional centering. This demonstrated advanced structural techniques for the late 19th century.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO recognises Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus for its outstanding architectural value and its representation of cultural interaction in colonial India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus became a <\/span><b>UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site demonstrates an important exchange between <\/span><b>Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Indian traditional architectural<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It represents an outstanding example of late 19th century railway architecture. Its design combines Gothic Revival features, Indian elements and advanced structural solutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heritage property covers 2.85 hectares. A protected buffer zone of 90.21 hectares surrounds the property to control harmful development pressures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maharashtra declared the building a <\/span><b>Heritage Grade I structure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 21 April 1997. Its protection operates under <\/span><b>Mumbai\u2019s heritage regulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>railway administration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Railways holds the legal rights over the property. The Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division of Central Railway, oversees its management and maintenance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus remains significant for its historical, architectural, cultural and transport value, linking Mumbai\u2019s railway development with its urban heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cultural Fusion: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terminus demonstrates how British architects and Indian craftsmen combined different architectural traditions.
