archaeological exploration off the coast of Poompuhar, the ancient port city once known as Kaveripoompattinam, in Mayiladuthurai district recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Poompuhar<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poompuhar, or <\/span><b>Puhar, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a town in the Mayiladuthurai district in the state of <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>\u2018Puhar\u2019 in Tami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l means the \u2018<\/span><b>estuary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 of a river in the sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located <\/span><b>close to the spot <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the <\/span><b>Cauveri River flows out into the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bay-of-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bay of Bengal<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was once a <\/span><b>flourishing ancient port city <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known as<\/span><b> Kaveri Poompattinam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which for a while served as the <\/span><b>capital of the Early Chola kings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Tamilakam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per archaeological evidence found during excavation, this <\/span><b>age-old city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is said to have been <\/span><b>established thousands of years ago.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Ancient pottery dating back<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><b>4th century BCE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been discovered offshore by marine archaeologists east of this town.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Silappathikaram and Manimekalai, the Tamil epics,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bring out the greatness of the city in some of the
