It is formed by the confluence of the Wardha and Wainganga rivers near the Maharashtra-Telangana border. The river flows southward for about 113 km before joining the Godavari at Kaleshwaram. It also supports forests, wildlife and water based livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pranahita River<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Pranahita River <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forms a major drainage network within the Godavari basin and carries the combined waters of several important peninsular rivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Origin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pranahita River originates at the confluence of the Wardha and Wainganga rivers near Tumdi Hettty, Kouthala Mandal, close to Sirpur (T), along the Maharashtra-Telangana border.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>River Course: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river has a relatively short course of about 113 km and flows mainly southward, which differs from the general drainage direction of many rivers across the Deccan Plateau.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>States and Districts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pranahita River flows along the boundary of Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra and Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial and Jayashankar Bhupalapally districts in Telangana.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tributary of Godavari: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After its southward journey, the Pranahita River joins the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/godavari-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Godavari River<\/strong><\/a> at Kaleshwaram in Telangana, forming an important part of the Godavari drainage system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drainage Basin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pranahita River carries the combined waters of the Penganga, Wardha and Wainganga rivers and drains a large part of Maharashtra\u2019s Vidarbha region and adjoining areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Basin Size: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pranahita sub basin covers about 109,078 km\u00b2. It accounts for nearly 34% of the drainage basin of the Godavari River.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tributaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important tributaries and associated streams include Mamda, Nagul vagu, Wil Vagu, Pedda Vagu, Madharam, Bamar, Dongri and Patra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dams and Project: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pranahita River currently has no <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/dams-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>dams<\/strong><\/a> built directly on it. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project includes a barrage project associated with the river system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water Transport: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river supports water transport between Sironcha and Kaleshwaram.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>River Festival: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also associated with the Pranahita Pushkaram, a traditional river festival observed in the Hindu tradition. The 12 day Pranahita river festival is dedicated to worshipping the river.
