These containers are headed for Inland Container Depots (ICDs) in north India, primarily at Tughlakabad in Delhi, Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, Dhandari Kalan in Punjab and Khatuwas in Rajasthan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corridor is also expected to carry fertilisers, foodgrain, salt, coal, iron, steel and cement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EDFC spans <\/span><b>1,337 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, running from Ludhiana in Punjab to Sonnagar in Bihar. It caters mostly to coal and mineral traffic from eastern India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises two distinct segments:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An electrified double-line segment of 936 km between Sonnagar and Dadri<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An electrified single-track segment of 401 km between Ludhiana (Sahnewal) and Khurja<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>EDFC was fully commissioned in October 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its alignment deliberately takes a detour to bypass densely populated towns including Mirzapur, Allahabad, Kanpur, Etawah, Firozabad, Tundla, Hathras, Aligarh, Hapur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Ambala, Rajpura, Sirhind, Doraha and Sahnewal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>News Summary: Completion of the Western Corridor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three sections inaugurated cover 326 kilometres and were developed at a cost of over Rs. 20,700 crore. These sections lie between Gujarat and Maharashtra:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Sanand (N) to New Makarpura<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Umbergaon to New Saphale<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Saphale to New JNPT<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the last remaining stretch between Vaitarna (Saphale) and JNPT now operational, the WDFC gains direct connectivity to JNPT.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freight loading on the corridor is expected to increase further as a result.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, the two corridors now form a 2,843-km dedicated freight network carrying about 426 freight trains daily.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Performance and Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Speed Gains<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most measurable benefit has been in average speeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Railways data shows the average speed of trains on DFCs was over 50 kmph, roughly double the average speed of freight trains on the non-DFC network. Freight services account for over 65% of total earnings, and this revenue plays a crucial role in subsidising passenger travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scale of the shift being attempted is significant:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current share of freight traffic moved by rail: around 27%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Target under the National Rail Plan: 45% by 2030, equivalent to 3,000 million tonnes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highest ever loading achieved: 1,670 million tonnes in 2025-26<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>The Road-Rail Comparison<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Highways running along the DFC routes constitute just 0.5% of India&#8217;s road network, yet they carry almost 40% of total road freight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This concentration explains why shifting even a portion of that traffic to rail can meaningfully reduce congestion, fuel consumption and emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>The Third Corridor<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Budget this year, the government announced plans for a <\/span><b>third dedicated freight corridor, connecting Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The detailed project report is currently being prepared. This corridor would create an east-west link, complementing the existing north-south and north-west alignments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For logistics costs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: India&#8217;s logistics expenditure as a share of GDP has historically been higher than in comparable economies.
