strategically down the Red Sea coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mocha Port<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mokha, or Mocha, is a historic town located in <\/span><b>southwestern Yemen,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the<\/span><b> Red Sea.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>long famous as Arabia\u2019s chief coffee-exporting center <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the source of the term mocha.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>chief port <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the<\/span><b> northern approach to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bab-el-mandeb-strait\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bab el-Mandeb Strait<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is situated about 75 km <\/span><b>north of Perim (Mayun) Island,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the <\/span><b>strait reaches its narrowest point.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>nearby town of Dhubab, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 45 km south of Mokha, <\/span><b>lies opposite Perim Island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near the entrance to the strait.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tradition holds that Mokha was <\/span><b>founded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the<\/span><b> 14th century <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><b>Sheikh \u02bfAl\u012b ibn \u02bfUmar al-Sh\u0101dhil\u012b,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> leader of a Sufi order (tariqa) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who is supposed to have <\/span><b>brought coffee drinking to Arabia from Ethiopia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the strait.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span><b> important trade center <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through the<\/span><b> 17th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was regularly <\/span><b>visited by Indian traders,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who <\/span><b>traded finished metal products for Yemeni coffee and myrrh.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also dealt with <\/span><b>Egyptian merchants, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who sailed to Mokha on the summer northwesterly Red Sea winds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Coffee for the European and Middle East markets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was Mokha\u2019s chief export from the 15th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Trading establishments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were maintained there by the<\/span><b> British East India Company, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Dutch East India Company,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, briefly, the Danes and the French.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Long under Ottoman suzerainty,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mokha was surrendered to the imam of the Zayd\u012b Shi\u02bfah, Mu\u1e25ammad al-Mu\u02beayyad I, in 1636.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>prospered <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>17th and early 18th centuries;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even the port of Zeila (in present Somalia, across the Gulf of Aden) became tributary to Mokha and its rulers until 1884.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ottomans held the town again from 1849 to 1918.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Decline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>conflicts between <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>European powers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b> Ottoman Empire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and those <\/span><b>between the Ottoman Empire and the Zayd\u012b imams,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contributed to the port\u2019s decline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decline was hastened by the<\/span><b> development of coffee plantations on the island of Java<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (now in Indonesia) by the Dutch and by the <\/span><b>rise of the South American coffee industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (early 18th century).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> modern port<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was established in <\/span><b>1955 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and came to serve as a <\/span><b>minor logistics and military hub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the major commercial ports of
