1126 CE).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was also the site of a <\/span><b>major battle between<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Western Chalukyas and the Cholas <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under Vira Rajendra (1063 CE &#8211; 1070 CE) when the latter laid siege to the fort.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defenders fought well and hard and beat back the Cholas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area later was <\/span><b>taken over by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/vijayanagara-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vijayanagar empire <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and once was the abode of one of the most powerful Hindu rulers of all time, <\/span><b>Krishnadevaraya.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Qutb Shahi dynasty succeeded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Vijayanagar empire and subsequently fell into the hands of the <\/span><b>Mughals <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when their capital of Golconda was annexed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 18th century, the <\/span><b>Maratha general Murari Rao captured<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the fort area and revamped the structure to strengthen it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Hyder Ali,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the then ruler of the Mysore kingdom and father of Tipu Sultan, <\/span><b>forced Murari Rao to surrender <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when he ran out of water supplies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the onset of the British invasion of India, the important fort fell into the hands of the <\/span><b>British East India Company.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gooty Fort <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a blend of <\/span><b>Hindu-Islamic architecture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was made of <\/span><b>granite rocks,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>domes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><b>constructed with fine stone, mortar, and lime,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensuring sustainability.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Built in the shape of a shell,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this fort actually comprises <\/span><b>15 small forts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with different gateways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>outer wall with bastions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connects all the gateways of smaller forts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort also features two imposing buildings, one of which is a gymnasium, while other is a barrack.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the edge of the cliff, there is a pavilion of polished limestone called Morari Rao\u2019s seat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various wells were created at the top of the hill.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>several temples <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the fort, like the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Nageswara Swami Temple, Hanuman Temple, Jyothimma Temple, and the Ramaswamy Temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a <\/span><b>Dargah inside the fortification.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several ruined structures on the upper level of the fort.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehansindia.com\/news\/cities\/anantapur\/gooty-fort-commemorative-stamp-proposal-nears-final-approval-1120445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>HANS<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gooty Fort is an ancient hilltop fortress located in the town of Gooty in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
