The United Nations General Assembly established the day in 2007 through a consensus resolution. The first observance took place in 2008.<\/span><b> International Day of Democracy 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides an opportunity to review democratic institutions, citizen participation, freedom of expression and the role of parliaments in peaceful and inclusive governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Day of Democracy 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be observed on 15 September 2026. The 2026 focus highlights human rights and wider participation in decision making. UN Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres has stressed bringing people from different sections of society together to improve decisions, build trust and create peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies. A UN Headquarters event will examine citizens\u2019 assemblies, participation, dialogue and deliberative democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Day of Democracy Theme 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme for<\/span><b> International Day of Democracy 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connects democratic participation with human rights, inclusion and accountable governance. It highlights the importance of ensuring that people can participate in decisions affecting their lives. The focus also supports discussion on freedom of expression, civic participation, equality and institutions that protect democratic values.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> International Day of Democracy 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed from international efforts to strengthen democracy, parliamentary institutions and citizen participation across countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1997 IPU Declaration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Inter Parliamentary Union adopted the Universal Declaration on Democracy in September 1997, affirming democratic principles, government and international cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ICNRD Process: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International conferences on new and restored democracies began in 1988 following the initiative of Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino after the People Power Revolution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Doha Conference: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sixth ICNRD conference was held in Doha, Qatar, in 2006. Its declaration and Plan of Action reaffirmed fundamental democratic principles and values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UN Resolution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qatar led consultations and drafting efforts for a UN resolution. The General Assembly adopted it by consensus on 8 November 2007.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First Observance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first International Day of Democracy was observed in 2008. Since then, parliamentary events have been organised across countries every year.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 Celebration<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will include discussions and activities focused on participation, dialogue, inclusion and responsive governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UN Headquarters Event: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations Democracy Fund and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>United Nations<\/strong><\/a> Office for Partnerships will host an event on 15 September 2026 at UN Headquarters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Citizens\u2019 Assemblies: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event will examine experiences of citizens\u2019 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Member parliaments mark the day through workshops, debates, photo competitions, radio programmes, civil society meetings and other public activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Global Participation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2008, hundreds of parliamentary events have been organised worldwide to increase awareness about democracy and citizen participation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>International Day of Democracy 2026 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlights democracy as both a governing system and a continuing process requiring participation, rights protection and public accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li
