{"id":124271,"date":"2026-09-13T13:59:53","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T08:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=124271"},"modified":"2026-09-13T17:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T11:38:10","slug":"south-asia-wildlife-enforcement-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/south-asia-wildlife-enforcement-network\/","title":{"rendered":"South Asia  Wildlife Enforcement Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, member countries of the South Asia\u00a0 Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) have adopted the \u201cKathmandu Declaration\u201d to strengthen regional cooperation against illegal\u00a0 wildlife trade and related transnational organised\u00a0 crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About South Asia\u00a0 Wildlife Enforcement Network<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>intergovernmental law enforcement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> support body of South Asian countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Member Countries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It comprises eight South Asian countries namely: <\/span><b>Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/maldives\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maldives<\/a>, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>officially launched in 2011<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the second meeting of South Asia Experts Group on Illegal Wildlife Trade <\/span><b>held in Paro, Bhutan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Aim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SAWEN aims to <\/span><b>combat wildlife crime through cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, collaboration, coordination, capacity building and communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Secretariat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was formally established in <\/span><b>Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2011.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objectives<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To take <\/span><b>initiatives for bringing harmonization and standardization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in laws and policies of member countries concerning conservation of wild fauna and flora;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To document <\/span><b>the trend of poaching and illegal wildlife trade,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and related threats to the natural biodiversity within and across countries in the region;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To strengthen <\/span><b>institutional responses to combat wildlife crime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by promoting partnership with relevant institutions for research and information sharing, training and capacity building, and technical support; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To encourage member countries <\/span><b>to prepare and implement their National Action Plans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to combat wildlife crime and to collaborate towards effective implementation of such plans.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Governance Structure<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of a <\/span><b>General Assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an <\/span><b>apex body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of SAWEN comprising ministers of the concerned ministry or his\/her senior level government delegate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Executive Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EC): It consists of all principal focal persons of the member countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Secretariat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is headed by the Secretary<\/span><b> General<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to perform day to day activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsonair.gov.in\/south-asian-countries-pledge-stronger-action-against-illegal-wildlife-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">News On Air<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network is an intergovernmental law enforcement support body of South Asian countries.
