Ramanathaswamy refers to Lord Rameswara, or Eswara, consecrated by Lord Ram.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> first stone temple <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was built here by the<\/span><b> Chola kings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>12th century,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>additions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were made <\/span><b>by kings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pandya-dynasty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pandya dynasty<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>rulers of Vijayanagar.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>great Krishna Deva Raya of Vijayanagar came here in 1513<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after conquering Lanka and made magnificent gifts to the temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Sethupati kings of Ramnad<\/b> <b>became the guardians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the temple <\/span><b>during the rule of the Nayakas, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they finally completed the temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Temple is <\/span><b>one of the 12 Jyothirlinga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> temples, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam, meaning &#8220;pillar of light&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 12 Jyotirlingas, 11 are in the north, and <\/span><b>only Ramanathaswamy is in the south.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the four Char Dham shrines.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The other three are Dwaraka, Puri, and Badrinath, all located in the north.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>only temple dedicated to Lord Shiva among the four Char Dham shrines.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Architecture:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple is renowned for its stunning <\/span><b>Dravidian architecture,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characterized by towering gopurams and intricate carvings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all ancient temples in South India, there is a <\/span><b>high compound wall (madil)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><b>all four sides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the temple premises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple has the<\/span><b> longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
