However, in <\/span><b>1974 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>name <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of this park was changed to<\/span><b> \u2018Borivali National Park\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in 1981 to \u2018Sanjay Gandhi National Park\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers an expansive area of 103 sq.km., making it <\/span><b>one of the largest parks in the world <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located <\/span><b>within city limits.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It forms roughly <\/span><b>20% of Mumbai city&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> geographical area.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Kanheri Caves <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the center of the park were an important <\/span><b>Buddhist learning center <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>pilgrimage site sculpted by Buddhist monks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the <\/span><b>9th and the 1st centuries BCE.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were <\/span><b>chiseled out of a massive basaltic rock outcropping.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Caves feature viharas, stupas, prayer halls,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other structures of old-style Buddhist architecture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>There is a Jain Temple <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with three <\/span><b>huge carved idols s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ituated <\/span><b>on the way to the caves.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, the park also has t<\/span><b>wo lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, namely <\/span><b>Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the deer park, the lion safari, and the Samadhi of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kadamba, Teak, Karanj, Shisham,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and species of acacia, Ziziphus, euphorbias, etc. are found in this National Park.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most famous of these is the<\/span><b> karvi plant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><b>blooms just once every eight years.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Leopard, sambar, chital, barking deer, rusty spotted cat,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hyena, common palm civet, small Indian civet, Indian crested porcupine, Indian hare, Indian flying fox, common langur, and bonnet macaque.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The park also boasts<\/span><b> 251 species of birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a large variety of
