an 18-year-old tigress and one of the major crowd-pullers at Mumbai\u2019s Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), has died due to age-related health issues recently, taking the tiger count in the national park to 11. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sanjay Gandhi National Park\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located near Borivali in the<\/span><b> northern part of Mumbai, Maharashtra.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers an expansive area of 103 sq.km., making it <\/span><b>one of the largest parks in the world located within city limits. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms roughly <\/span><b>20% of Mumbai city\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geographical area.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In the early days,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the park was known as <\/span><b>Krishnagiri National Park.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, in 1974 the name of this park was changed to \u2018<\/span><b>Borivali National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and in 1981 to \u2018Sanjay Gandhi National Park\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Kanheri Caves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the center of the park were an important <\/span><b>Buddhist learning center<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pilgrimage site <\/span><b>sculpted by Buddhist monks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the <\/span><b>9th and the 1st centuries BCE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were chiseled out of a <\/span><b>massive basaltic rock outcropping.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caves feature <\/span><b>viharas, stupas, prayer halls, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other structures of old-style Buddhist architecture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a<\/span><b> Jain Temple <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with three <\/span><b>huge carved idols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situated on the way to the caves.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, the park also has two lakes, namely<\/span><b> Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>deer park, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the lion safari, and the <\/span><b>Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kadamba, teak, karanj, shisam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and species of acacia, ziziphus, euphorbia, flame of the forest, red silk cotton and a number of other varieties of flowers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Karvi, or karvy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><b> flowering plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t that<\/span><b> flowers once in seven years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be found in the park.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Leopard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>sambar, chital, barking deer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rusty spotted cat, hyena, common palm civet, small Indian civet, Indian crested porcupine, Indian hare, Indian flying fox, common langur, and bonnet macaque.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The park also boasts 251 species of birds and a
