{"id":124436,"date":"2026-09-14T13:59:30","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T08:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=124436"},"modified":"2026-09-14T13:59:30","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T08:29:30","slug":"tso-kar-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tso-kar-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Tso Kar Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Tso Kar Lake Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ladakh administration recently launched an ambitious project to revive and restore the shrinking Tso Kar Lake by diverting nearly 320 million litres of untapped glacier water daily from the glacial stream, Rupsho Kharnak. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Tso Kar Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tso Kar, meaning \u201c<\/span><b>White Lake\u201d in Ladakhi,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>high-altitude salt lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the <\/span><b>Rupshu Valley of Ladakh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At an elevation of approximately 15,280 feet (4,660 meters), it is the <\/span><b>smallest of the three prominent lakes in the region, alongside Pangong Tso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Tso Moriri.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake&#8217;s <\/span><b>name derives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><b>white salt deposits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that fringe its shores, <\/span><b>remnants of its saline nature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Tso Kar basin includes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both <\/span><b>Tso Kar Lake and Startsapuk Tso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a<\/span><b> nearby freshwater lake)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating a rare wetland system.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It experiences<\/span><b> extreme winters <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with temperatures falling below -40 \u00b0C, while summers see a maximum of 30\u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>nomads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly known as <\/span><b>Khampas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>inhabit the Tso Kar area,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they make a <\/span><b>living here by collecting the salt <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the banks of Tso Kar Lake and <\/span><b>selling it to the regions nearby.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is <\/span><b>surrounded by marshlands, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which <\/span><b>host different types of birds.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some of these are <\/span><b>Brahmi Ducks, bar-headed geese, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and great crested grebe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>most commonly spotted birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the lake, though, are the <\/span><b>black-necked cranes, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which visit the lake to lay eggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Mammals like Kianga,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> largest of the wild asses, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can also be spotted.
