The demand has renewed attention to the significance of Hyderabad\u2019s integration into the Indian Union in 1948.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Hyderabad Liberation Day?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Hyderabad Liberation Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is observed on <\/span><b>17 September<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every year <\/span><b>to commemorate the integration of the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union in 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The day marks the end of the Nizam\u2019s rule following<\/span><b> Operation Polo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which began on <\/span><b>13 September 1948.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>17 September 1948,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Hyderabad State Forces surrendered to the Indian Army<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bringing the military operation to an end and paving the way for Hyderabad\u2019s integration into the Indian Union. It marked an important step in the political integration of India after Independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hyderabad Before Liberation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of Independence, <\/span><b>Hyderabad was the largest princely state in <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/british-rule-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">British India<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ruled by <\/span><b>Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>When British paramountcy ended in 1947, the Nizam did not accede to India and instead sought to maintain Hyderabad\u2019s separate status<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To avoid an immediate break in relations, India and Hyderabad signed a<\/span><b> Standstill Agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><b>29 November 1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was intended to maintain existing administrative arrangements while negotiations continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement, however, did not resolve the question of Hyderabad\u2019s political status. Over the following months, relations between Hyderabad and the Indian government deteriorated, while political tensions and violence increased within the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation became more complicated with the activities of the<\/span><b> Razakars,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an armed organisation associated with the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and led by Qasim Razvi. The <\/span><b>Razakars opposed Hyderabad\u2019s integration with India.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, the <\/span><b>Telangana peasant struggle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which had begun in <\/span><b>1946<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, c<\/span><b>hallenged the feudal order under the Nizam. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With political conflict and internal unrest intensifying, a negotiated settlement became increasingly difficult, eventually leading to<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/operation-polo-1948\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Operation Polo<\/a> in September 1948.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Operation Polo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As negotiations failed to resolve the Hyderabad question, <\/span><b>the Government of India launched Operation Polo on 13 September 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was a <\/span><b>military operation to bring Hyderabad into the Indian Union<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with<\/span><b> Major General J.N. Chaudhuri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading the Indian forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The operation lasted for five days. On <\/span><b>17 September 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Major General Syed Ahmed El Edroos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who commanded the Hyderabad State Forces, surrendered to the Indian Army. The Nizam subsequently announced a ceasefire, bringing the operation to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surrender ended the Nizam\u2019s rule as an independent princely authority and paved the way for the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hyderabad After Integration<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Following its integration into the Indian Union in 1948, Hyderabad continued as a separate state.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A major change came with the<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/state-reorganisation-act-1956\/\" target=\"_blank\"> States Reorganisation Act<\/a>, 1956<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reorganised states largely on linguistic lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Telugu-speaking Telangana region of Hyderabad State was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. The Marathi-speaking and Kannada-speaking areas of the former Hyderabad State were merged with Bombay State and Mysore State respectively.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, concerns over development, employment, education, public spending and the implementation of safeguards promised to Telangana contributed to a separate-state movement.
